Model 632-1 extraction problem

Just gone done trying to shoot my 632-2 revolver when I started to have problems extracting the empty cases. I reloaded these .327 Fed. Mag. from primed cases (I don't know the source of the primers as they came with the cases) which I bought on line. To this was added 3.5 grains of Clays topped off with a XTP .312 85 grn bullet. The primers all seemed to be flattened out filling the primer pocket entirely. Please view photo for before and after.

I load the 327 Federal and have used about every weight bullet, lead and the 85 TP and 115 Gold Dots. I have loaded some barn burners and never seen that. I use 2400. Power Pistol, H110

Where did you get the powder data as Hodgdon does not list Clays for the 85 gr XTP?

How did you measure the powder did they seem hot or over charged? That's all I can "guess was a over charge.

If it is Federal brass they sold primed brass with of course Federal primers

IMO CLAYS is too fast a powder to use in the 327 Federal.

Are you 100% sure of your powder charge?

Clays is similar to Bullseye in burn rate and 3.5 grains is the starting load in the smaller H&R .32 Magnum with the 85 grain bullet.

So if your primers are flattened and the cases are sticking I suggest you recheck the powder charge.

Let us know what how this works out .

Did you ever shoot the gun with factory ammo?
I say this because my 632-1 with Federal 100g jsp's has very diffuclt extraction. Its been back home to S&W and they replaced the cylinder!
The bad news is that the 'new' replacement is only marginally better so I'm considering returning it again.
I have the same model in a dealer exclusive which is the satin stainless not the black stainless and there is no extraction issue with the same factory ammo.
Just my $0.02!

With "Clean" cylinders and brass and hard extraction usually
means an over load and high pressures.
I had a hard extraction today while testing loads but it was on the 9th loading and I then cleaned the cylinders and was good to go.

M D Smith data has the 85gr Jhp with 5.5grs of Clays at 1251 fps and maximum.
3.5grs might be below 50% case volume and cause High pressures.

Never a problem with factory ammo.

However I found the recoil and flash of factory .327 mag. far greater than my hand load. Also besides hard extraction, at one point the action became stuck and I could see the case all the way back to the recoil shield, and had a bear opening the cylinder.

I couldn't find a Clays load for the 85 gr XTP. Soooo silly me I found a Clays charge of 3.5 gr for a 90 grn cast LRNFP and thought that was close enough. Could that be the problem?

"Normally" you can use the next higher weight bullet of the same type, You can also use FMJ data for lead as there is less pressure
But you are the opposite.

Again how did you charge the case? What powder measure, did you weigh them? I still am guessing double charge or over charge.

The max load data I have for Clays is 5.5 for a 85 grain FMJ This is from a semi reliable source. Based on that I again say there is something funky about your actual powder weight. Again there are much better powders for this cartridge and they are all slower.
