I have decided to reload some ammo for my 7mm-08 rifle, a Remington 700 with a 22" barrel. I have used the Hornady 139 gr. SST light magnum factory loads and will probably stick with that bullet. However, I'm not sure about which powder would be best for them. Someone suggested a powder called BigHorn. I have never heard of it. Others have suggested Reloder 15 or 17 or IMR 4064. Any other suggestions on a good powder choice??? Thank you!

Did you get good accuracy when you used it? What kind of bullets did you use with it? I will use this rifle mainly for deer.

#1 rule of reloading

NEVER EVER, & I don't say never lightly or frivolously, never use just one source for load data, especially if that source is from a "favorite loads" post on the 'net.

For starters, google is your friend :)

You know the general weight bullet you want to load. google that weight + the caliber

When you know the style bullet (your needs may be target, as opposed to hunting) pick a manufacturer who can supply your needs best. Then go to their online web page for recommended load data.

From that data, the load that seems to fit your needs best will give you a powder to research. Google that powder manufacturer's web page & compare their recommended data (recipes) with the bullet manufacturer's recipes. The difference can tell of advertising hype, I tend to stay away from the goods that push unbelievable data.

When you decide on a starting point for reloading, DO NOT, & I say DO NOT ignore the 10* safety rule. All things vary, lot strength of powders, bore diameters, bullet metal hardness, brass volume, & primer strength, etc, etc, etc. Your gun & your methods are unique. When you find a load that does as you wish, it will be unique too :)

This is the other half of our sport, as fly-tying is to fishing. It's a personal thing, you do for you, everyone's needs are different.

stay with most any medium burn rate powder you can find....IMR4895 and WW748 worked quite well in my former BIL's remington 788 with 140 grn Noslers.

I use medium range powders, particularly Rl-15 and IMR4895. My most accurate load comes with Rl-19, but the velocity is lower than with the faster powders.

The faster powders mentioned will work but also build up pressures faster to get higher fps.

You might look at the slower 4350 and also 4831 for high fps and pressure around 50,000 that are easier on the weapon, along with the slower Ball powders.

All my rifles from the 270 and larger do better with cases that are at least 75% full or more for accurate hunting loads.

Target loads are a different story.....

Just an FYI, if your in need Recobs Target Shop has 4895 and 4350 in stock in both one and 8 pound containers (who knows for how much longer).

Best loads for my 7mm-08 were : with the Horn 139 , 48.0grs H4350 , 46.0grs IMR 4350 & 43.5grs Varget . With a 140 Nosler BT , 46.0grs IMR 4350 & 40.5grs H 4895 . With a 150 Nosler BT & a 150 Rem Corelokt were , 40.5grs H 4895 , 44.5grs IMR 4350 & 48.0grs H 4350 . All loads with Rem 9 1/2 primer . Work up to these as they are MAX or pretty close to it . Very good to excellent accuracy & good velocity for terminal effect .

In my opinion for the 140 grain class of bullets you can't go wrong with IMR 4350,or 4320. I have loaded 7mm-08 for over 20 years know and have found these 2 powders to be the most consistant for 7mm-08 in all the guns I have loaded it for.

For myself, the extruded styles such as 4064 doesn't meter well in my Dillon 650....and while I've only loaded FL 308 on this press, the extruded powders annoyed me in other calibers as well.
