30-06 reloads POI

I failed to mention old ugly always has 2 rounds through the bore...it shoots 1/2 to 1 inch high. With the K-3 PCH scope it's hard to be more precise. The 30-06 Kimber is fired once after cleaning ...mainly because I am paranoid, I had an early Ruger #1 in 22-250 that took five rounds through it before it was really ready...although only an inch or so off. I shot over 400 Phil's for farmers with that rifle before a collector paid too much for it. The first was kinda funny...went to see a baseball playing friend who had signed with the Phillies. Was talking to his father and said Mr ----. You have a groundhog out there eating your(soy) beans. He groused about the darn thing actually cussing it. It was only about 250 yards but way to far for a 22. Said he'd pay 10 dollars to get rid of that critter. I went to my ol Scout...got a feather pillow out and put on the hood. He asked me what I was doing...I told him...getting ready to make 10 dollars. Put the rifle on top...sat in the shade up at the house and up popped ole Phil. He told me I couldn't hit that critter that far. Loaded her up...when ol Phil sat up on top of his hole...looked around litterally licked his chops and then the top half of him disappeared. He thought I missed him...got on a tractor down to the hole. When he came back he handed me a 10 dollar bill...and said...boy I hope you never have to shoot a person with that thing. Then he said if you lower your price a little I bet I can get you more business. He did too. I think his son played into AA ball in his 2nd year before hurting himself. I played one summer in A class. I made more money actually working a job

Except for the couple hundred empties and components. If I load them up I'll have enough to shoot for the next 20 years.

Maybe sell the components and buy more factory ammo? Nah,.

Once I found a great load I would load 100 rounds of it. That way I practiced with what I hunted with. I like Speer 180 Grand Slams for elk in 30/06.

I still have hunting handloads I made in the 1990s. I shot 20 the other day and they were spot on and all 20 fired.

My old Ruger 77 has a preference for AA4064.

Best accuracy I get from that rifle regardless of bullet weight is with that powder and the Winchester large rifle primers.

Difference in impact is probably the bullet configuration. Any length difference in the bearing surface regardless of weight will do it.

My Kimber as I said shoots the Superformance 165 SSTs better than good. Otherwise I pretty much use the original bonded bullet the 150 gr Remington Corelokts. Not the most accurate bullet but still a very good hunting bullet. For the ole 742 I use that bullet and 4895. It shoots a bit more accurately in the old 03A4 I have...but shoot very seldom. In the Kimber it shoots a respectable 1 1/4 or less...good for any reasonable range I may shoot. I consider the 165 gr SST an ok bullet for hunting but use Nosler 165 Accubonds for serious hunting. Great bullets for hunting...Never shot them in ol ugly 742 though. The load is a bit heavier than I like to shoot in the old autoloaders Any one of the rounds I have will shoot in any 06 I have interchangeably to 200-225 yds. Really don't usually need to shoot much farther than that anyway...and safe in the semi but not my cup 'o tea
