Win 571 aka Hogdgon HS 7

Hey, Shooters!
It's 95° in my part of Kansas today, so I'm thinking of doing some reloading. I recently came across a little over a pound of Win 571 that I bought from an old fellow several years ago. On researching it on the web, I found that it is the same powder as HS 7. Following that, I found info in a couple of my old loading manuals showing starting loads of HS 7 for a .44 Mag., of 14.5gr. up to max loads of 18.5gr. with a 255 home-cast, plain base, semi wad. I'm shooting these in a 7.5" Ruger Redhawk. Has anyone tried these powders in a .44 Mag? I fired 10 of these this morning and they seem to be very hot! Emphasize the HOT! I think I'll load some more with 13 grains and see what happens? By the way, the 15 grainers are very accurate but punishing to shoot!

Supposed to be the same, but I would still work the load. up. HS7 was one of my fav for high perf 10mm & 357sig, then they dropped it.

I think HS7/Win 571 is a wee bit fast for .44 Magnum loads. That's why you describe them as HOT! When I was loading for compensated raceguns for IPSC shooting, 571 was usable but on the fast side of what was used.

Since I have a few of the 15 gainers left, I plan on chronographing them. Then, I'm going to load some 13 grainers and chronograph them, too. Then, maybe I'll have an idea where I'm at? I find it hard to understand why Lyman and another company, which I can't recall, would show up to 18.5 grains as safe. I'll let you know how it comes out.

W571/HS-7 is very similar to Blue dot in burn rate and just a little faster than 2400 so IMO it will do well in the .44 Magnum

Back when HS-7 was available there was a time I only used it, HS-5 and HS-6. Now of course 2 of the 3 are gone so I use W231(HP-38), W540(HS-6) and W296(H110). I really liked HS-7 in full power .357 Magnum loads and I'm still using HS-6 for full power lead .357 Magnum loads and medium to medium hot jacketed .357 Magnum ammo.

I have not loaded W571 in the .44 Magnum but I see no reason you won't like the results. If you load for the 10mm you would do well to save W571 for loading that cartridge.

Back a few years, I used HS 5 in .38 Special and I think it was one of the most accurate loads I had ever come across. I really hated it when I couldn't get more!

The old manual I have doesn't list any 571 loads for the .44 mag or the .41 mag, only 231 and 296 for those calibers.

Listed 571 for .38 spl, 9mm, 40 s&w, and 10mm.

HS-7 data for .41 & .44 Magnums

While looking through my old manuals, I came across this RCBS Cast Bullet book from 1986 with info in it about HS-7 in the .41 and .44 magnums. It shows a starting load for the .44 of 12 gr. at 1,203 fps and 13 gr. max load at 1,319 fps with the 250 gr. cast SW. Apparently, that other old book that said 18.5 max with a 255 gr. bullet was in error? WOW! No wonder my 15 gr. loads felt like dynamite going off in my hand!
This book also lists a starting load of 12.5 gr. at 1,179 fps and 13.5 max at 1,272 fps with a 210 gr. cast semi-wad in the .41. This manual is about 20 years newer than the other, as I recall. A little more current. I loaded some of both of the .44s this afternoon for trial later in the week. I'll keep you all posted. Appreciate everyone's suggestions! Stay tuned!
