I've been looking to pick up some 2400 for a few years now but it seems to be unobtainium. The 1 local store that carries reloading supplies almost never has any Alliant pistol powder in stock and 2400 seems to be extremely hard to find online too. So, I decided to ask Alliant about it. Here is what I asked them and their reply, if you are interested.

My question:

When are you going to start manufacturing 2400 again? That powder seems to be almost unobtainable. I used to load it years ago and would like to start using it again, but I have not found it locally or online for years. And I'm not interested in Power Pro 300 MP as it doesn't do anything for me that H110 and Accurate #9 already do. Thanks in advance for any help you can give me on this subject.

Their reply, which I just received:

James,
We are still making this propellant and all the rest. We make 18 different propellants at the New River Energetics (NRE) facility. 2400 is one of those made at NRE. NRE had been running 24/7 for years and at full capacity. Batches of propellant that used to last us 6-8 months today are not lasting 6-8 weeks and in the case of 2400, I don't think the last batch lasted 4 weeks. The last batch hit the shelves in early August and by mid-September, I was again getting calls as to where this could be found again. And those calls have not stopped.
Hopefully with the changing political climate, supplies will start to stabilize in the market.
Thanks,
Duane V.

Sounds like they must be producing a bunch of powder still, but they just can't keep up with demand. It sure would have been nice if he could have said when they were going to run off the next batch of 2400 though. I used to load it ages ago, but went off with other powders and now that I want to use it again I can't find it anywhere.

My local gun shop has hundreds of pounds of powder including 2400 and priced right $34 p/lb.

Mine too.
Even cabelas had some for awhile until they had a reloading supply sale.

Sounds like they should expand production. Perhaps build a new facility?

My guess is they choose to keep it scarce. Or just don't like profits.

Exactly my point. So scarce that the shop can engage in highway robbery. $34/lb is a sin.

Yep, I agree. I don't think I'd buy it at that price either. Too many other powders that will do the job for much cheaper than that. Such as Accurate #9, which is a powder I'm very familiar with and like a whole lot. But locally here around the Lafayette-New Iberia area I haven't seen 2400 in ages. I'm thinking about going to the gun show in Lafayette tomorrow and maybe I;ll see a few lbs at not too high a price.

They are running 24/7 and the demand is highly unusual in that 6-8 months supply has now become 6-8 weeks. They are smart enough to see that this is not normal and likely will not continue. I would not extend facilities on something that may or may not continue to be a trend. Would they sell more powder if they expanded? Perhaps for a while but is it a guarantee that will continue indefinitely? They don't like the phone calls either and it sounds as if their intent is to make enough for the average market which currently does not exist. In other words they are not intentionally shorting the market.

It pops up here at one of The better reloading suppliers. I'm liking AA#9 as a replacement though.

Muddocktor, Just watch the traffic tomorrow as they have setup the barricades for the Mardi Gras parade. Just for the heck of it check with Mark Waguespack of Waguespack guns and ask if he has any 2400 in stock. If he doesn't have it at the show he may have it back at his shop. So you might have to see him again sunday. Bought a bunch of stuff from him over the years. Have fun. Frank

And how many billions of dollars and red tape would that require?? How much profit would be needed just to offset the initial cost.??

It's not that easy. The are part of a giant conglomerate.

I believe they make a profit.

Looking for 2400 powder in my area (Chicago suburbs) is like looking for a Unicorn. You hear they are around but you never see them. I used it for my 357 and 44 magnum loads. I have been looking for about 6 months and no luck. ;-(

I like 2400 also but if it's not around. well move on.

There are several powders that will work as well or better than 2400.

I went to the gun show in Lafayette LA and it was mostly plastic wonders and black rifles. They had only 2 revolvers I was really interested in; a 4" 28-2 in really nice condition but no box or paperwork that I thought was priced too steep at $800 and a 6" blue 27-2 in decent condition but had a few rust specs in the blue and on the trigger for $787. But the seller of the 27-2 wasn't interested in what I had to trade so that was a wash. As for powder, I only saw 1 person selling and all he had was Green Dot, Red Dot, another Alliant powder that I don't recall and some HP38. He had some good prices at $15/lb but I didn't need any of the powders he had.

I loaded some .357 magnum loads this week and noticed that my can of Hercules 2400 is almost empty. The price on the can is $9.99. Looks like I need to plan on paying more, if I can find it.

I WAS finding plenty............

Up until about a year ago, I didn't have any problem finding 2400 and assumed that it was 'back' and I was out of the woods. I still have a couple of pounds, but I've been looking to get few more and there has been none to get.

One thing I don't get is this regional poor and plenty thing. Somebody reports buying a few 8 pound jugs every week while others haven't seen it in years. I've STILL only seen one cannister of BE86, ever. I could see supply outstripping demand during the several years of shortages we just had, but lately other powders have been plentiful.
