Default Handloader Special Edition - a review

Handloader magazine has a special edition (winter 2017) that has articles on the top ten reloaded handgun cartridges. They surveyed the reloading manufacturers for their best sellers and compiled them. All the articles are written by Brian Pearce and are quite good - at least one, though, is a re-edit of a previous article.

The articles have reloading tables that include powders and projectiles from multiple manufacturers. Unlike reloading manuals, the data is not limited to their brand. It puts a lot of data in one place.

Bought it yesterday and had my nose stuck in it ever since. I like it.

Disclaimer - I have no connection with anybody on this.

I went grocery shopping with my wife and stopped at the magazine rack and found the Handloader Special Edition. And when I became aware of my surroundings again my wife was halfway through the checkout line.

I haven't saw it but according to my log I load more 38 spl & 45LC than any of the other calibers I shoot.

Sounds cool. Does that edition come with the standard subscription (six issues a year) or should I head to the Book Store and look for it because it is only available there?

Wolfe special editions (like the 2 levergun mags) are not usually part of a normal subscription.
According to their website "This special edition is available on NEWSTAND or DIRECT-ORDER ONLY!"
2017 Handloader Special Edition Top 10 Handgun Reloaded Cartridges - Wolfe Pub
Thanks for the heads up!
I'll be looking for this at the supermarket I know carries the Rifle mags (and many others like Sports Afield).
My wife always knows where to find me if I go missing there.

The next Handloader (I have not yet received) is #312 and looks like this:
https://www.riflemagazine.com/magazi...12Partial2.pdf
It has articles on the 44 Special+P and powder coating bullets along with many others including
the 50 B&M Alaskan which I have always had an eye on.

Thanks! Also available on Amazon, but a bit more expensive than directly from Wolfe Publishing.

Got to down load the newest HL. Interesting on the .44 SPL.
Since I have all three for load's, I like it...
But not much what I haven't known.

It's not a rating or comparison. It's just the 10 most shot/reloaded pistol calibers out there. IIRC, 9mm was the most common one though. Well worth the price of admission though..

Most handloaders have more than one reloading manual. Most of the stuff in the Handloader magazine is easily found anywhere.

It would be good for someone that is starting and doesn't own a couple of manuals. For the seasoned loader, it doesn't add much for the price.

I ordered this magazine (when I also ordered a couple different years of back issue Handloader Magazine, on DVD) even though I suspected I might already have it's articles. Turns out I do.

All the articles are from past issues & all were originally authored by Brian Pearce though the ten articles in this Special Edition do not show an author on any of them.

They are good articles, even worth re-reading, with lots of good data. I have many other Reloading Guides & articles but, IMO, you can never have too much reference data.

After scanning thru my saved articles/files on my PC, here's a list of where the (10) articles came from, in case you subscribe to Handloader too & want to avoid duplicates:

.

(10) - 500 S&W Magnum X-Frame Behemoth - Handloader #227

(9) - S&W 460 Magnum overview & reload data - Handloader #242

(8) - Reloading Lipsey's Ruger Blackhawk 45 Colt +P test & loads - Handloader #275

(7) - Loads for the Ruger LCP .380 Auto - Handloader #268

(6) - Loads for the Lightweight Ruger LCR .38 Special - Handloader #276

(5) - S&W 357 Magnum - M627 Pro Series - Handloader #267

(4) - Handloading the New S&W M69 L-Frame 44 Magnum - Handloader #293

(3) - Loads for the Widely Popular 40 S&W - Handloader #292

(2) - Handloading the .45 ACP - Handloader #218

(1) - Pearce Loads the 9mm Luger - Handloader #282

.

PS: It's table of content does have a small box that states all features are by Brian Pearce.

All articles are by Brian Pierce, as stated on the Table of Contents. This is basically a compendium of articles previously appearing in "Handloader". Publisher's note says some content was added to some of the articles. (I don't plan to go through and check, I'm not that OCD.)

I almost didn't buy it for the forgoing reasons but it was the second store I visited and knew if I didn't buy I would later bemoan the fact that I didn't.
Anyway, it puts 10 handgun cartridges in one place and if you haven't been subscribing to Handloader it could be very useful.
