I have over the last few months streamlined my pistol, shooting powders down to two (Mulwex AP50N for .38 S&W and .32 Auto and Tightgroup for everything else) and now it is time to do the same for my rifles.

I load .223, .243, 30-30 and .303 British for use in rifles with the 30-30 and .303 rounds both loaded with 150 gn lead projectiles. I know this runs the gauntlet from small cartridge capacity to the old original black powder cases, and ideally I should use different powders, but I have found with my pistol reloading that if I have just one or two powders to choose from things are a lot simpler.

The .223 is a 100 meter goat buster. The.243 is my hunting rifle so needs to be accurate out to 200-220 meters or so. Both the 30-30 and .303 rounds are used only on the range these days on steel out to 200 meters, hence the lead bullet loading.

As Mulwex powders are readily available here I am tending towards AR2208 after looking over the reloading tables. Anyone got any experience, good or bad, with this powder in these calibres? Or a better “all round” powder to try?

I've used Varget in many cartridges. I've found a few instances where it's better than H4895 from an accuracy standpoint, though Varget will often provide slightly higher velocities.

H4895 is certainly more versatile than any of the powders mentioned here so far. A further advantage over the other powders is that charges can be safely decreased a considerable amount for reduced loads. To me, this is only an advantage when developing reduced velocity cast bullet loads.

I think IMR4895 shares the same attributes of H4895, but I have not used the IMR version on a regular basis in many years.

ADI AR 2208 IS Varget powder, same thing. Made by ADI

This is the "equivalent chart" Which is not the EXACT same. BUT I have the EXACT list and Varget IS AR2208

Powder equivalents, ADI Powders Handloaders' Guide

Well that makes me feel a lot better about AR2208. If it is Vargetand several are using it in different cases with good effect then I will go ahead and try it myself.

Yes Varget is made down under and is AR2208
