Any issues using a standard small pistol primer with this powder?

I haven't seen anybody with issues but seeking details from users.

Loading some 158 gr JSPs - if anyone has a favorite load I'd be all ears.

I never tried but I don't think AA#7 needs a magnum primer to ignite like W296/H110 or HS-6 do.

Do further checking because I don't know for sure.

Ive probably loaded 40 pounds of HS-6/Winchester 540 in various cartridges from 45 LC to 357 and thousands of major (USPSA) loads in 38 super and never used magnum primers. I’ve never had a problem igniting the powder and never had a ruptured primer.

I’ve not used #7 but find Ramshot Enforcer to be an excellent midrange 357 powder that’s very clean and meters consistently. I don’t believer magnum primers are recommended although I’m sure it would work fine. I find the recoil to be moderate as well.

If you want full power magnum loads H110 is the way to go and for mid range Enforcer is excellent.

Specifically I've never used AA#7 in 357MAG loads (yet) because it's a powder I only started using a few years ago but have tried in many different cartridges (revolver & pistol) since & regular primers, either small or large, work fine with it.

I can't say the same for AA#9 though.

How do you know the performance wouldn't have been better using a magnum primer? I wasn't worried about ruptured primers, I am talking about a complete burn.

I've loaded several calibers using Accurate #7. #7 is one of my go to powders for higher performance .38 Super and 9X19 loads.

Unless they may get used in extreme cold temps, I doubt you'd have a true need for magnum primers with most #7 application

I've not used AA#7 in 357 Magnum, but I have used it in 9x19mm. No need for a magnum primer.

Just an FYI, I have used Accurate #7 for 327 FM loads. I haven’t used a magnum small pistol primer in ove 40 years of reloading, so I’m sure these loads didn’t get one.

In . 357 I've only used it in mid-range loads (~1000 fps w/158 gr bullets) but I just use standard primers. But then I don't even use magnum primers with AA-9 or 2400, either.

I was quite pleased with Accurate #7 in my model 66. I was using CCI-500 small pistol primers with this load. BTW this was not the best group of the day with this load but it is close to the average for this session.

I have found 2400 performs better with a standard primer over a magnum primer.

I seldom use maximum loads, and generally use only Longshot, Lil Gun, Unique, or new 2400 - none need magnum primers anyway. I bought a batch of small pistol mag primer several years ago and the loading recommendations changed. :)

I have loaded max, near max .357 loads with A5 Have felt no need to use Sp mag primers. std works just fine. 20 years and counting.

I'm looking at the Western Powders Handloading Guide (edition 7.0)
357 Magnum Pistol - accurate #7 powder:
Bullet weights from 115 gr. to 187 gr.
All loads used are with : Winchester WSPM Primers

Now doesn't WSPM stand for Winchester Small Pistol Magnum ?
Western shows this primer used in every load for every powder (even acc.#2) listed for the 357 Magnum .

Looking at the 38 Special and 38 Special +P loads , every powder , shows the use of : Winchester WSP primers for all ?

I've never loaded Acc #7 but I would be tempted to try both ...or whichever primer you have , and see how clean and complete a burn you get . Now Days it's not about what you want to use but what you have in hand to use !
The 357 Magnum and Acc #7 might be able to go both ways , regular or magnum .

I dont use mag primers with A7 in my 357 load and never had an issue. I like 10.7gr with a 158 for a soft load at 1060fps and quite accurate in my 5" 627.
