Anybody load for the 10mm Magnum?

I know the cartridge doesn’t make sense to many people, and honestly, I’ll still carry a .44 Mag or 10mm Auto most of the time, but I’m curious about playing with the 10mm Magnum. I don’t care whether it’s more or less powerful than this or that cartridge, so let’s please not rehash that argument, but I’m planning to convert a 610 to be able to also shoot the Magnum.
If anyone out there is loading for it, can you help me with a few questions:

1. From actual experience, can 10mm Magnum be reloaded with standard 10mm Auto dies, or do I need 10mm Magnum dies? If so, is Redding the only option, or is someone else making them?
2. Can you steer me to references with 10mm Magnum loading data? I’ve found the Taffin and Accurate Arms data, but more data is always better.
3. Has anyone done a “pull down” for any of the Double Tap factory 10mm Magnum loads? I’m especially interested in their load for the 155 gr. Barnes. I don’t even see the velocity listed on their website for that load.

Thanks in advance for any help,
Kyler

1. Standard .40/10mm dies work fine. I loaded my first batch of 10mm Magnum with Lee dies. I’m now using Hornady. I wasn’t even aware anyone was producing proprietary 10mm Mag dies.

2. Load data is very sparse. I used the data from Taffin’s article. I used a 200 grain XTP over 18 grains of 2400, IIRC. The real experts on the 10mm Magnum here on the forum are colt_saa and Bluedot 37. Hopefully they’ll chime in here shortly.

3. No, but that will be interesting if anyone has.

The 10MM Magnum is a wonderful cartridge

The Taffin article and the Accurate loading guide are the only two I have ever paid attention to but there may be others. Use these as your place to start. If you have powders outside of what is listed that you would like to use just mention them here and we will all be happy to help you out

Over the years I have loaded many new and/or obscure cartridges that had no commercial data and I am no stranger in developing my own load data from scratch.

For example I developed a subsonic 240 JHP 10MM Auto load for when my buddy's company submitted samples of integrally suppressed SMGs to the Government when they were investigating the replacement of the aging MP5/10 inventory.

The 10MM Magnum easily gains 200-400 FPS in velocity over similar projectiles that are loaded into the 10MM Auto cartridge

You will enjoy the cartridge. Especially if you have the 6 1/2" Model 610 :D

Great help, thanks so much.
It seems like I've had some of my best load development in the 10mm Auto with 800X (yes, I weigh ALL the charges). But I haven't seen any data for that powder in the 10mm Magnum. Anybody use 800X in the Magnum?
Any suggestions for loads for the 155gr. Barnes copper bullet?
Thanks again,
Kyler

Call Barnes. You must have some goal in mind vis-a-vis a certain fps range?

Other than that, a start with 10gr (or so?) of 800-X and a 155gr XTP should get you somewhere near 1300 fps (per Hodgdons 10mm load data) using the larger 10mm Magnum brass: from there it should be a relatively simple work up to your "heart's desire"...?

Nice thing about 800-X is that it is a very easy powder to work loads up with: not really "peaky" nor prone to abrupt spikes like some others.

Good luck and keep us advised as to your results, please!

Cheers!

P.S. From what I can determine the DoubleTap REGULAR 10mm 155gr Barnes (vs. the 10mm Magnum) is estimated to be at 1400 fps. Should leave quite a bit of room to work upwards...?

1- I started using my existing Lee 10AUTO dies but bought Hornady's 10mm/40 set that I have dedicated for 10MAG use.

2- I've read Taffin's & Accurate's data. Taffin's only lists 180 & 200gr bullets. I'm partial to 165gr but have loaded some 180gr, no 200gr bullets. I prefer #7 over #9 in the 10MAG but have mainly worked up loads with Alliant powders. I have used Quickloads data as a guide but only in conjunction with other data, not exclusively.

3- What's a "pull down"? Since full copper bullet loads would have to be treated differently from traditional cup & core the Barnes would require specific data for them.

I've never used 800X or any all copper bullets.

BLUEDOT37: It is interesting that I have never seen any Blue Dot powder available (and I know it is a great one for 10mm and 40 S&W) either on the shelf or online, but have used 800-X from the very beginning of my reloading experience...?

Apparently 800-X production has been discontinued, unfortunately: many dissed it because it supposedly "metered like cornflakes", but I still handweigh 95% of my loads so it never really was a problem for me... Glad I still have a few pounds left as it is an easy powder to work loads up with.

Cheers!

P.S. I believe the term "pull down" has to do with taking a bullet (typically a factory round) apart to try to determine what powder was used and/or to reload the projectile differently (which has been known to lead to all kinds of other problems when that little tidbit of information was not disclosed!). See kentuckyballistics.com for THAT sad story!
