Third Model Perfected
I posted a picture of this gun back in March, and that photo was much softer than these. These new pics show the scratches, and most importantly, a possible cut down barrel. The front sight is mounted over the first couple letters of Smith. The barrel was crowned and whoever did it seems to have done a fairly good job. Can anyone tell me how this affects the value of the old girl? I found some minor scratches under the barrel where it apparently was put in a vice for the job.

I'm going to guess the value will be reduced by about 40%. It looks to be a 3rd model, and to my knowledge were only made in .22 RF. The hole in the barrel end appears larger than that, or is it just the photo perspective? What is the finished barrel length now?

Do the serial numbers on the barrel & latch match the frame number?

It ls 22 caliber and the barrel is now 6". All numbers match, frame and barrel under extractor. It actually shoots pretty good. I've only shot it once, but plan on taking it out some more. Thanks for the response.

I'm sure you know this already, but you should probably not fire high-speed cartridges in this gun. Normally it will digest them all right, but it can be iffy.

I only shoot RWS subsonic through it so far. I might try some other standard velocity rounds as well. Also I had mentioned the SN under the extractor, but it's actually under the barrel release latch. Are there SN's anywhere else but the fore strap and under the latch? I'm taking it out to the range Monday for a little work out. This gun is really tight and has a smooth action. The Third Model is interesting in that it shoots single and double action. Range report to follow.

There should be a S/N mark on the front grip strap, latch, back of the extractor, and on the barrel (hidden between the ears that catch the latch). And maybe penciled on the inside of the right grip panel, if you're lucky.
Great guns. A pleasure to shoot. Like holding history in your hand.

Thanks Mitch. Didn't find it between the ears or behind the extractor, but curiosity got the best of me and I dropped the side plate. It was stamped there as well. Because the ears seem to be integral with the rest of the frame it doesn't bother me. So it looks like the only place I'm missing is the back of the extractor. That could have been a mistake of an assembler who didn't mark it, or a replacement extractor. Internally the gun was really clean. There's no way I'm going to take down the pivot point. I made that mistake with an Enfield revolver, and after a week and much anxiety it was back together.

Does it have the standard or Olympic chamber? It's fairly easy to tell, as the Olympic chamber you have to push the round in the last 1/10" or so. From the results I have seen, it does enhance the accuracy. My 3rd Model is so/so in accuracy, but part of that is my 70 yr old eye's and the gun's light weight. I haven't tried too many different brands of ammo in it. Be sure to post pictures of the targets!

The rounds just drop right in, so I guess it is not the Olympic Chamber. WilCo on posting targets Monday.

Sorry. I guess I didn't describe the barrel S/N location quite right. It's at the rear of the barrel between the latch ears, under the latch. Very small numbers, easy to overlook. You may need a flashlight.

Perfected Target
Went to the range today. This is from 15 yards with RWS subsonic. My tremors make it difficult to get any real accuracy, but it looks like it shoots a little to the right, generally. I know a good pistol shooter could do much better with this gun than I can. As others have said about these guns, the light weight and small grips make it hard. I'm going to move the rear sight over a little to get it more on center.

Really nice find, and a good shooter as well. If it'll make you
feel anybetter, I have to shoot pretty fast standing, so I don't
tip over while shooting. "Sides, I didn't think anything could cause
tremors on a W4.
Next time you get a chance, why not try some sort of rest while
shooting. I bet it'll still do the job.
