Found something in my grandpas garage...s&w 38 ctg

Hello everyone, to introduce my self im from Texas, I am new to the forum hope im posting in the right place did a search and post thread was closed similar thread.. I was cleaning out my grandpas garage and found a old S&W ctg SN# 456XXX on the top of the barrel it reads this:" 38 sw ctg marked smith an wesson springfield mass us pat'd may 11 1880 jan 3 1882 april 9 1889" its not in greatest condition kinda rusty functions well but barrel looks out of shape...any info on what I have and also if it can be restored like the barrel redone or just leave it as is? thanks i would appreciate any info..

If you could post a pic, I'm sure some of the experts here can tell you all about your gun.
 
Welcome! I think we can identify your revolver by the information you gave; 38 S&W caliber, sn 456XXX, last patent date 1889 should be a 38 Double Action, Fourth Model shipped from the factory around 1904.

As for the deformed barrel, we would have to see some photographs to determine what is wrong? There were around a half-million of these guns made and parts including barrels are often available on ebay or Numrich Gun Parts, so if the original is damaged, you could pick up a replacement. A thorough cleaning and lubrication might bring the gun back to firing condition. Make sure the cylinder always rotates and locks into battery on each and every pull of the trigger. A gunsmith will sometimes help you to determine safety, but many will just tell you not to shoot the gun even if it is in pristine condition.
