Default Old M&P followed me home - DOB anyone?

I found this old M&P in a local shop for not too much money. Dry and dirty but seemed sound so I grabbed it. A 1905 HE, 4th change, in 38 Spl. Serial is 274xxx. The book says 1915 to 1940. Can anyone date it closer than that? It turned out to be a good buy. The more I clean it, the better it gets. Shows holster wear and some freckles but locks up like a vault. No shake, no marks on the recoil shield, bore is like a new gun, timing is fine. Now I have to shoot it!
Thanks,
Bruce

1917, I think. Very nice revolver. Are the stocks numbered to the gun?

Those early round butt M&Ps have an appeal all their own. Great score!

Nice, looks ot ber in great condition. I also enjoy the round butt with large medallions, and notice the steep angle of the checkering; the long, slender diamond. Handsome...

Nice..I don't usually like round butt guns but that one is an
exception. Congrats on a nice find.

I haven't taken the stocks off it yet so I don't know if they are numbered or not. I still have to find the screwdriver I ground to fit grip screws.

I found my fitted screwdriver. Yes, the stocks are numbered to the gun. In pencil, on the one side. It was not a gun on my want list particuarly, but it was cheap enough that I couldn't pass it up. Worked out well, I like it.

Default Old M&P

Very nice find. A round butt is a particularly handsome gun in the 4", to my way of thinking. If you shoot it, regular .38s are good, as it is just before the reported cylinder heat-treating at SN 316648.

Regards,

Dyson

240xxx would be a 1915 gun. What is the last patent date on the barrel? You probably have a 1905/third change rather than a 1905/fourth change.

You can shoot modern .38 Special ammo in that gun, but avoid +P rounds. I shoot wadcutter target ammo in my older .38s (1900-1922); low pressure and good accuracy.

Post some pics! And don't be afraid to start your own thread for your own gun.

That is a great looking gun! I don't know what your plans are for
it, but if you decide to shoot it, I'd really like to hear your results
and impressions. Whatever you paid, it's money well spent!
Thanks for sharing, TACC1.
