I'm new to older S&Ws. I picked up a pre 27. There are matching serial nos. on the butt, cylinder and in the ejector rod shroud, but not on the yoke. Here there is a 5 digit number stamped. Does this mean parts were replaced? There is also a T stamped there. The serial number indicates it was manufactured in 1956.

That five digit number is just an assembly number. Assembly numbers are used by the factory during production, and then have little meaning afterward.

You should also find the assembly number on the left side of the grip frame. "T" is an assemblers or inspectors mark.

The yoke may still have the serial number on it, it's on the back edge closest to the cylinder. Break out a flashlight, align one of the charge holes with the yoke and see if it's there.

Thank you, you put my mind at ease. I was expecting it to be where it is stamped on later models. It always pays to ask the experts.:)

Since your question deals with stamping of numbers, I will point out if there is an assembly number stamped in the yoke cut, it will not be stamped on the left side of the grip frame. A minor point, but to eliminate confusion.

Assembly numbers were stamped on the left side of the grip frame when S&W began stamping serial numbers in the yoke cut.
