I just picked up a 5 screw M&P in the S846000 range. It has the made in USA stamping and large logo on the right side. There is a 3 74 stamping on the left grip frame showing it's been to S&W for work. The barrel and cylinder also have the diamond stamp on them confirming that

The New York City cop's badge number is on the butt along with the SN.

Now the question, does anyone know if the city of New York will tell me the name of the policeman who had this weapon in the 50's and 60's. And if the city will respond how do I get in touch with them.

I haven't had the gun long enough to letter it. Mr Jinks might have the policemans name if he was that sent the gun to Smith in March of 1974.

BTW I've lurked here for quite a while. Now I'm a member!!

The NYC Police Dept is almost certainly not going to release the name associated with the badge number.
You could try the New York City Police Museum, but you have to understand that from their perspective you want private information about a former MOD.
When I wanted info about my Dad & Uncle, both former cops, from the NYCPMuseum I had to provide info that verified a personal relationship.

Hello
I show a bunch of M&P revolvers in the S844xxx - S848xxx range that shipped to the NYPD in October, 1946. Every one of them that I've been able to get precise shipping dates on so far have shipped on October 11, 1946. Roy has confirmed several others in that month, and I suspect they have have gone out on the same day.
I've not yet identified any other revolvers in that same serial range that went anywhere but the NYPD, although there are three examples in my database for which I have no destination.
Since you already know yours was an NYPD gun, maybe that isn't much help to you, but I thought you'd like to know it was apparently part of a large order from New York.
