I was wondering if its easy to purchase a Pre 29 4 inch box, plain blue with the button latch and the paperwork/manual for both the 4 inch & 6 1/2 inch. My thinking is it might be better to purchase a pre 29, 4 inch; then find the box & paperwork. Thoughts?

Blue presentation cases are harder to find for the 4" guns. I've been looking for another one for a while... Easier to find the complete package - from my experience.

Don't pass on a beautiful gun if you see one because of no box.Unless the gun itself is not as important to you than a complete package is.

It is probably easier to find the complete package rather than the case first and then the revolver to go with it. By the way, the 4-inch case for the 44 Magnum was never made with a button latch, only the clasp style.

Thanks Bill, I do not know why I said button as I had your commentary up at the same time looking at the various types of boxes. I purposely looked at that before sending. My head was, well lets just say, somewhere else. Hopefully the complete package will show up one of these; preferably at some local garage sale where I can win the pre 29 lottery.

4" black box

IMHO! ! The 4" black boxes are very hard to find. Right now I have 6 - 6 1/2" boxes in my gun room in different stages of restoration. Over the years of doing these restoration I have done only one 4" box!

Last year at Tulsa, I found a lovely 4" pre 29. That night I was showing it to a fellow who had an empty box but no tools that he was willing to part with. It wasn't cheap. I subsequently found the tools but no paperwork, yet. So, It can be done!! The case was all original and not in any need of Joe's restoration work though he's done others for me (my 29-0 clamshell case for one).

NICE Pre 29, 4 inch!!!!!! Joe restored my Pre 29, 6 1/2 inch & I might say; an outstanding job.

The only paper work I have seen with the early 44 Magnums (prior to 1960) is the warranty card numbered to the revolver. The first Parts & Instruction Sheet dates to 1960. It is possible the 44 Magnums were shipped with a Helpful Hints brochure, but I have never seen one associated with one of these guns.

I am glad that Bill posted this. I was wondering what paperwork folks in this thread were talking about. Unless you find a repro, I would guess that once the warranty card, numbered to the gun, is separated from the presentation case, it is a slim to none chance to find the original.

Thanks guys. I know the revolver itself is the most important so the hunt continues. Best of all - I learned something again on this forum.

Per Doc44s comment on the 4 inch box never shipping with the button latch, here are the known 4 inch boxes with their respective latches.
Enjoy

All three had the same interior/tools though the #3 box had a blue cotton rather than the satin lining.

The only 4 inch 1956 box with the push button/slide latch that I'm familiar with is the Combat Magnum box which shipped with the early combat magnums or ordered separately for 5 dollars. :)

Bill, thanks for answering this question as I didn't remember the circular having a date or not. If you click on the picture it will show larger.

Question for Bill & Chuck

I have seen many of the "black" cases, my problem is, most of the interiors are in rough shape if any at all! All have had a cardboard bottom die cut with the silhouette of the gun and backed with walnut blocks, probably scraps from the grip Dept.! My question(problem) is the cloth covering! ? ! I have seen a blue satin, usually faded with holes, and a blue cotton! There have been many more satin than cotton but enough of the cotton to make me believe it was from the factory. Do either of you gentlemen know if there was a specific time period for the usage of the cotton cloth? Thank you for any and all help!
Joe

Joe...based on the cases in my collection, satin was the predominant material used, with a slightly lighter blue cotton material being used sparingly in late 58 and early 59. I don't have that many cases from 58 and none from 59, but the early mahogany cases with a cloth lining used the cotton material.
