Hey new here. Recently got a model 30 I think belonged to my great grandfather( no model#, 32 cal, serial on butt 630xxx, nickel, wood grip, 3" barrel, no screw above grip). It is in pretty good condition with normal wear but is incomplete. I am missing the ejector, center pin and center pin spring. I don't know a lot about these guns but I think that's all. Are these parts readily available as either used or new? and can someone recommend a good source?

Welcome to the forum.

The first we need to confirm for you is, 'all' of the parts that you need:
Obviously a nickel ext. rod, ctr pin and it's spring.
Do you have the larger .280" diameter extractor spring?

Your model also uses a spring collar .175" long. It may still be in the yoke.
Remove the front sideplate screw and pull the yoke out of the frame and cyl at the same time. Gently tap the yoke's cyl axis sleeve on the bench and see if a collar falls out.

I probably have some of the parts you if not all that you need. And can provide correct lengths of the parts if I don't.

When you attempt to acquire parts, it's important to identify your gun as the "Model of 1953 .32 Hand Ejector" yours is from 1957 built on the new I frame and uses the same parts as the Model 30 which is the same gun, it just wasn't stamped the Mod 30 until the very next year.

The extractor rod and ctr pin parts for the Model 30-1 built on the J frame will not work, unless they are shortened. The ctr pin spring is shorter.

This photo shows the large extractor spring on top, the extractor rod screwed part way into the extractor star, and the ctr pin with ctr pin spring (but mounted on the wrong end of the pin).

This photo does not show the separate collar, which looks like a little top hat.

Center pin looks broken.....crowned end broken off?

No, the photo is actually of a .38/32 I frame parts.

The .38/32 I & J frame, and .38 Spl J frame ctr pin is actually installed in a reversed position of the .32 and .22/32 ctr pin I & J frames. It's the only photo I had on hand.

Sorry so late had some stuff come up that sidetracked me. Yes I think I have the extractor spring and collarIMG_0107.JPG

Ok here's what you need:

Ctr pin spring: S&W #070630000, Brownell’s #940 070 630as Center Pin Spring : CENTER PIN SPRING | Brownells
Or Numrich Gun Parts SKU: 299550 34 S&W Accessories | Numrich Gun Parts

Neither Smith, Brownells, or Numrich Gun Parts has a Model 30 ctr pin. Order this J frame pin and just shorten it:
Center Locking pin S&W # 071320000, Brownell’s # 940 071 320, or Numrich Gun Parts SKU: 298990A34 S&W Accessories | Numrich Gun Parts

Install the extractor star in the cyl, then the ext spring and collar, Insert the ctr pin thru the collar with collar to the rear. Install the ctr pin spring on the pin, and thread on the extractor rod and tighten; all out of the gun without the yoke.

Push the rear tip of the ctr pin flush with the extractor star, and cut the forward end flush with the front tip of the extractor rod. I use a Dremel tool with a carborundum cut off wheel., and stone flat and square if needed.
There you have it.

Hope this helps and you can shoot and enjoy it,

What about the extractor? I looked on Numrich and closest thing I see to this gun is in the "32 hand eject (I-frame)" section. some have guide pin holes some don't, same for center pin drilled. and I'm not even sure that is the correct section.

Do you mean to say you also need an extractor (the star with the 6, 1/2 moon cutouts) for the rear of the cyl?

You need Extractor #300400 it's on this same page as the other parts: 31 S&W Accessories | Numrich Gun Parts

You'll notice at the top of the page the heading is 31 (J frame). The model 31 is the same as your gun except it has a square butt. But the J frame is incorrect, the Models 30 and 31 are new I frames (like yours).

HOWEVER, the extractor just so happens to be the same length for the New I and J frames. The extra length of the J frame and J size cyl was made up for by using a longer extractor rod. So it's lucky that you have that part already.

#300400 is the extractor you need which has two holes for the alignment pins in your cyl, and the hole in the center for the ctr pin. It will measure 1.440" to 1.450" with .010" of tolerance. These vary just a bit and may take slight fitting of the front end of the extractor rod if it's a bit too long once everything is screwed together.

Just an FYI: as you see the extractor is not cheap, $43.xx. One other option is a parts kit on ebay and gunbroker. You can get almost all parts for the entire gun less the frame and/or barrel for about the same price, sometimes less.

Hope this helps,

Yes also need the extractor. I don't mind the $43 since I don't have anything in the gun. Just want it back in working order. Thanks for all the information. It's very appreciated.

I have a fit issue. somehow about 1/16th to 1/8th off... Forget about springs and center pin for now.
Basically I have a extractor running through the cylinder with the "collar" sitting on the end of the extractor. Should the "collar" be contained entirely inside the cylinder or sticking out some?
I think the extractor has too much total length.
So the yoke wont sit flush with the cylinder without pushing the extractor out.IMG_5220396.jpg

1. The collar is upside down. The small diameter end of the collar sticks out of the cyl. The large diameter will be flush with the cyl gas ring.

2. Is the extractor within the range in length from post 10: 1.440" to 1.450"?

3. W/O ctr pin or spring, screw it all together with the extractor rod, put it in the yoke, and see how well it fits in the gun.

The collar issue fixed it. The extractor is at 1.450 now. It was 1.460 and I had a guy machine off .01 yesterday.
