S&W barrels are right hand thread. But, you need a wrench that fits the frame at the front of the frame to remove or ins tall a barrel. If you don't you may very well spring the frame out of line and ruin it.A frame wrench fits around the frame and supports it from the barrel area all the way to and around where the yoke goes into the frame.

I believe you may be confusing the threading of the barrel with the ejector rod. When Hand Ejectors were introduced in 1896, the rod had a right hand thread. This changed to a left hand thread in the late 1950s-early 1960s.

If your talking ejector rods. The early right hand thread ones had either a large knob (lerk) or just knurling on the end. The newer left hand thread ejector rods have a small band cut behind the knurling on the knob.

Barrels have always been right hand thread.
