I recently bought a pre-17, serial number K7XXX. The pistol came with it's original gold box and a used cleaning kit. The screwdriver (which I've read is a sight adjustment tool) has a silver-colored handle with nine raised knurlings and a black shaft. The tool is magnetic. There are no stamps that say S&W.

Is this tool genuine for this 1947-era pistol?

Thanks,

Mark

The sight adjustment tools were not stamped with any S&W markings, I believe. If the handle is nickel and the overall length is about 3.25", then it is an SAT from the 1940-49 time period, according to the 4th Edition of the Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson. I sold one of these a few days ago on this forum.

I'm always amazed at the depth of knowledge of people about S&W firearms. I only wish I had a few of the pistols I've owned over the past 50 years (at the prices originally paid!). Thank you for your information.

I get it. And I'd say "me too" but I actually do still own every new S&W I ever bought, except one that I gave to one of my sons. I've sold, traded off or given away several that I bought used, however. Some of those I regret, including an early four screw .44 Magnum, that I sold during "hungry days" in the late 1970s.
