When did S&W stop issueing/selling the non-relief cut diamond target grips? I picked up a pistol at the gunshow this past weekend (will take some pics tomorrow) - a 6" 28 no dash Highway Patrolman 4-screw. According to SCSW the gun was made in '58-'59 (S# S189000). It sports a most beautiful set of diamond targets without the extractor relief cut. I'll add this one to my list of ones to get a letter on. There is no S# on the inside of the grips which I understand is normal for these. SCSW indicates they were early to mid 50's grips so that doesn't necessarily jive with the production date of the 4 screw 28 no dash though I suspect quantities may have been in stock later for purchase? Will post up some pics tomorrow.

Thanks,
Earl

They are great stocks but very unlikely that they came from the factory on your 28. I think the timeframe for these was 1951/52 or so, someone who knows for sure will be along. My favorite stocks from the '50s, with the exception of cokes of course. Enjoy.

Non-relieved target stocks were used at least up through the end of 1957. I don't know with certainty, but I believe the changeover to stocks with a relieved area (for N-frames) occurred in 1958. I realize stocks on the 44 Magnum and Combat Magnum have the relieved area (1956), but these models are the exception.

Thanks guys. After the raining stops I'll run outside to try and get some good photos to post up. Sounds like they are possible, maybe the letter will indicate. I'll send for one anyways. Chances are they were added at some point because I do think it might have been a service revolver possibly - yet no marks on the grips from ejecting shells. Earl

And, considering that 1956 is the known beginning point for relieved stocks on magnums, it's always seemed logical to me that relieved stocks would have began showing up for non-magnum models fairly soon after they were introduced on those two magnums. Since it became apparent to S&W that it wasn't necessary to fit target stocks to individual frames, I'm sure they had a substantial 'stock pile' of non relieved target stocks and there was most likely a transition period when either style could have been supplied - either as factory installed - or as aftermarket accessory items.
