Clean and Polish First Model .32 Hand Ejector

Thank you for sharing that journey from the corner of the safe to the bright sunlight of a new day. Interesting and, in my view, commendable, that you used such restrained grits to avoid further damage, and to restore a beguiling semblance of its initial beauty.

Best of luck should you decide to find the needed parts for return to service and a little range report!

Well done!

Question about Extractor

Looking at David Chicoine's book Antique Firearms Assembly/Disassembly, it looks like the extractor is the same as the early Model 1903 extractor. Does anyone know for certain? Numrich has a couple of them.

Jack First has the little screw that goes at the top of the sideplate for $4 plus $12 shipping.

While I do not discourage anyone from cleaning up a neglected, rusted or chipped firearm, in the case of very old ones (been there - done that) I'd proceed with some cautions. I'd not use any harsh chemicals on them as some (Nickel for example) can be compromised by things like Ammonia. I'd also suggest not using any power tools on them unless you are a professional and have lots of restoration experience with things like Dremel's, polishing wheels etc. An old and fragile finish can be ruined in seconds! Obviously (as always) there are a few exceptions for certain applications and a few experts using them.

I have restored my share of old guns and I can't think of one that doesn't now look better than it had. That said, always keep in mind when working on vintage and antique guns, the word "perfect" isn't usually part of the equation. You have to know when to stop.

I appreciate your comments. I would not have touched the finish on this gun if someone hadn't already started sanding on it, leaving it scratched. I purchased it for $300 a few years ago.

I will ask again if anyone knows if the ejector star on the early 1903 was identical to that on the 1896?

No the extractor is not “identical” The diameter of the center pin hole is larger on the ‘96.

Here’s a Guinea pig, poor thing. It taught me a lot.

Thank you very much! That is exactly the kind of information you can't find in a book.

You may have to resort to using whatever .32 model star extractor you can find, have the piece you need cut off and micro welded to your star.

I stole this photo!

It’s complicated, the extractor consists of several pieces.
All were hand fitted to a particular gun.

The center pin design was changed with the barrel lug and thumb release on the model 1903 .

YES,, the half of an assembled 1903 extractor with “star and ratchet” will drop right in a 1896! It’s the inside dimensions that were changed, including (I believe) a smaller thread diameter for connecting the extractor rod.
