Pre/no dash 29 cases
Hello all, what would be the correct wooden cases for these? While we’re at it,what is the correct sat/screwdriver. Thanks

Look at post #11 in this thread. The cases weren't wood back then.
Curious about nickel 5 & 4 screw pre-29's and 29's

Oh! Never seen one in person, just pictures. I assumed it was wood due to the wall thickness when looking down on it while opened. Is it heavy cardboard or something?

Several years ago a friend of mine brought me a black box for a pre 29 and asked me if I could sell it for him. He had little knowledge of firearms. He had gotten it from an elderly woman and it had belonged to her deceased husband. Nobody knew where the gun and the tools were. I opened it up and inside were a set of mint coke grips. Paw Paw probably replaced them with some rubber grips or something. I got Jr. to handle the deal at 25% of whatever they brought. The box brought $500.00 and the grips brought $800.00. Everybody was happy, even the widow, as this was her nephew who brought it to me and she was glad he got something for it.

Ok. Now what if it had the forward roll mark on barrel? Sounds like these shipped a little later if I’m correct.!

I have a 6.5” no-dash Model 29 in a wood, clamshell case, which I always assumed likely was original to the gun. No? Seems like I have seen a few Model 29s with wood presentation cases, but I also have a 4-inch gun that does not. The 4-inch has a considerably lower serial number.

The mahogany presentation case replaced the dark blue/black presentation case in the spring of 1960 so 44 Magnums stamped MOD-29 in the yoke cut would have been shipped in a mahogany case until 62-63 when the Model 29-1 and later the Model 29-2 were introduced. Prior to this time, 44 Magnums (model number or not) shipped in dark blue/black cases with a blue satin lining.
When the 44 Magnum/Model 29 with an 8 3/8-inch barrel was introduced in late 1958, it was shipped in a mahogany case with a cloth interior. This style of case was also used on a very limited basis for other barrel lengths.
The correct accessories for these guns are a sight screwdriver with a knurled aluminum handle (the all steel sight screwdriver finished in black oxide predates the 44 Magnum and is not correct), a cotton swab with a brass threaded base, and an aluminum cleaning rod with a brush attached (copper bristles with a brass wound core).

This case is pictured above in RKmesa's post and is the bottom 8 3/8" gun. This case used the interior style of the Black cases and were introduced because there was no case for the new 8 3/8" barrel length. I have seen this case in the 8 3/8" and 6 1/2" barrel lengths.
DEF3 - The black cases were very cheaply made and normally did not stand the test of time when used to store a gun. The sides are wood but the top and bottom are cardboard, like a tablet back, and covered. the first pebble grain covering was a cloth-based product but this was changed to a paper product, like book binding material. The gun was supported by the cloth in the case and usually produced holes in the cloth at the hammer, front sight, and rear sight.
