I`m looking for a model 36 for carry. So light weight is a factor. What are the best years of quality in these ?

I can't answer your question as to "best" year. I expect all S&W model 36s will do the job. I would go by condition, price and barrel length for a carry.

Hi,
For me I would stay with a pinned and recess model. I have a M36 no dash 17/8 inch barrel. Easy to conceal and the triggers were very good in those years. Production on mine was 1975.

Good luck,

If you want light weight you might look at the Model 37. If you are going to pocket carry it, then you might look at one of the many concealed hammer models. I would not carry a Model 36 these days, though I have several of them. If I THOUGHT I wanted to carry a Model 36, I'd strap on my Model 60 or 640.

I have a model 36 & 37. I like the carrying qualities of the model 37 but I like the way the 36 shoots better. Both revolvers will disappear in the front pocket but the 37 does not pull the pocket down as bad. Both revolvers were made in the mid 60’s and both are surprisingly accurate especially the model 36. It sure is fun to show up some of the guy’s at the range with the latest and greatest Glock or Sig with the old school 5 shot revolver with a 1 7/8 barrel…:D As for best years I don’t know if there would be a discernable difference between years but if I was looking to purchase one now, I would look as Beemerphile said at the model 60.

Personally I carry a pre Model 40. Light enough to carry, but heavy enough you remember you have it.

What`s your reasoning for not wanting to carry a 36 ?

Is the model 60 an airweight and is it 38 cal. I had one of the newer 442`s and hated it. It was very inaccurate and i`m no fan of locks. I`ve shot and carried a Colt Cobra which is an alloy framed gun and like it pretty well but sold it like a dope. I`ve been doing some research and the model 36 is pretty much tops on the list for a snubby.

The model 60 is a stainless version of the model 36. The model 37 is an aluminum frame version of the model 36. The model 60 would be more practical from a maintenance aspect of it being stainless steel but it is no Airweight.

So what does the 60 weigh, the 36 weigh, and the 37 weigh. I`m refering to earlier models of course.
