Awhile back I posted Graveyard Project N0.1, a 38/44 with a 6" barrel.
This project is no.2 and involves an LEO gun that was rode hard and put away wet. It started out last spring when I was standing next to my gun show buddy's table (he's a Colt guy) when a customer came up and asked my buddy, "are you still interested in this old .41 mag?" I said let me have a look, he handed it to me and seeing it was a S&W .41 and marked S.F.P.D., I inadvertly said San Francisco PD. My buddy sensed the smell of blood in my nostrills and said, "my offer still stands, $325." Sold! Wanting to stay in the good graces of my friend I fought the urge to say $400.
Fast forward 5 months and my friend and I have ajoining tables at the next hometown show. Its laying on the table next to all the 5K SSAs. Drooling over his table during the pre-show setup I find out he has a price tag of $450 on it. He had stated that he had wanted it as a pickup glovebox go to gun at the first show. We negotiated a price and I left the show with it. This was a case where emotions got the best of me and after getting it home I assessed the damage. But, its not everyday that you find a .41 S&W Mag in any kind of condition! And this one was PD marked!
Damage assessment: bad pushoff; left side of frame and cylinder moderate pitting (body sweat?); significant holster finish wear (50%) and that was my own assessment. I called the factory and asked if they could fix the mechanics. Answer was yes and they provided a shipping address. About a week or so later, I received a detailed discription of what was wrong with the 58. Lots more to be done! I signed the work authorization and mailed it off. Several weeks went by and looking at pre-shippment photos of the gun, it hit me, this gun was a trainwreck, that this was indeed a candidate for an overall refinish. Called it in! Stay tuned for photos!

I can't wait to see pictures of it. I have a project gun of my own waiting at a gun shop when I get the finances. It is a Pre-Model 23 Outdoorsman .38 Special 6 1/2 inch barrel. THe gun has some pitting on the left side of the barrel, and the rear sight has been replaced for some reason with that of a Model 27 (you can tell by all the checkering). But the action is excellent and the rifling is sharp and crisp. But that left side of the barrel is what is keeping the gun in the shop. For $400 though, I can't go wrong (I hope). There is nothing more appealing than an old gun with a story and like some old cars, some guns just beg to be restored.

Will try get better photos.

I would love to find a beater M58, to convert to a .45 Colt. :D

This one was already converted when I got it... to .44 Magnum. Rough on the outside, smooth on the inside, all-in-all a most useful conversion.

Taking a .41 Magnum to .45 Colt is peddling backwards...

I love 58's....

Jim, since your #58 is missing the original stocks you should go ahead and put a set of Patrick Grashorn's stags on it. The stags look perfect on a #58...too bad the only set I own looked better on my nickel #57.

I have a couple pair of 25000+ year old Alaskan fossile bone grips with medallions that Patrick made for me awhile back. I will dig them out of the safe and see how they look on the old 58. Will post photos when I can get to them. Forgot all about them!

58 with stags?

Here ya go....she has a Tyler on now, but the stags look great...as you can see, I got Patrick to make me a set with 'Extra Bark'.....that was not the brightest idea on a Magnum revolver  I may have to get another set that are a bit more smooth....but, these are really easy to get a grip on ;)

Now that is a sharp looking gun. I am really going to have to rethink getting a Model 58, never had one before.

No Jim, you should buy a new pair, not use old ones, LOL!!

That is a nice looking job... I've owned 58s on and off since 1974. The only two I have left were someone elses "project guns". One is a 1964 first year of production gun that someone thoughtfully parkerized...

Day one on the range..shot one was the high one... The grips were badly chipped on the bottom...

A woodworker friend of mine cut and rounded the bottoms making them into "PC Targets"....

Gun two was what I always wanted to do with a 58..Magna-Port, action job, bobbed hammer, smooth trigger..very slick shooter...now wears a set of fancy Hogue wood grips...

Shot one was the low one...

Found a parts dealer on GunBroker who was selling an entire 58 minus the frame...so I have the replacement parts to put it back to original...

If you don't reload, try Georgia Arms for their 210 LSWC ammo...it duplicates the original police load without all the leading..

Great guns...thanks for sharing.

I'm in the same boat! My 58 suffered from push off, outside of that it is perfect!
He's over at the gunsmiths being fixed as we speak. I call mine "Fighting 58". Dale
