IMO the original magnas on my 28-2 look great, but they are not the most comfortable in my hand. My dad gave me a set of targets that a friend gave him in the early 80's. He thought they were for an N frame, but they just don't seem to fit. ( K frame maybe?) I have been checkin' out some N frame targets on ebay and they are quite pricey. I am willing to pay the price if they are worth it but I am wondering if something from the Hogue, Pachmayr, etc would be better.

check out CDNN investments... they have some of the newer smooth target size grips with medaillions for under $40 bucks... i have a 28-2 4" and am wanting checkered targets for it... just makes the gun look a lot beefer

Is there a chance that you can soon visit a good sized gun show? If so, then you might have a chance to see and hold the stocks you seek. It is a personal decision and a stock that is comfortable to one shooter may be seriously disliked by the next one to handle it. Go and see if you can handle a large group of 28-2's and you will find many non factory stocks that perhaps one will work for you. Good luck, Kyle

The magnas don't have enough bulk on them to feel comfortable when I shoot my 28-2. A Tyler T grip improves the feel tremendously, but I prefer to use an older, slightly worn down N-frame target stock. I have a nice set of stocks that I swap out before I head out to the range.

Hogue mono-grip for comfort and wood for looks. I don't worry about looks since all my guns are shooters and they wear the mono-grips.

I'm not a fan of rubber grips even for range use unless I plan on shooting a bunch of 357 magnum or 44 magnum full house loads.

I'm a huge fan of both Ahrends and Altamont for aftermarket stocks. I think of Altamont as my source for fancy but functional and Ahrends as traditional high quality while not being over priced. You can go to BluMagnum, Kieth Brown, and several others but you are going to pay for that fancy wood and hand tooling they offer. Below is a link to the "Ultimate Highway Patrolman Thread" and it is full of decent pictures with all kinds of grips.

Grips

I agee with "deanodog". I like the black rubber Hogue Monogrips for shooting. I have two M-629's that I use for bowling pin competition and both have the Hogues. Much more comforatble than any other grip I have tried.

I have small hands and the rubber Hogue are the only grips I use on shooting guns. They don't move around in the hand during shooting and absorb the recoil better than wood. They don't look like much, but they work.

I think that, at one time or another, I've put every conceivable shape of grip from every conceivable manufacturer on my revolvers. What I've discovered about myself is that I can't tolerate any grips that are wide at the top of the grip frame. In order to be able to shoot comfortably the grips must be as narrow as possible at that point. I have huge hands -- I can easily palm a basketball -- but I don't think hand size alone is the issue. My problem is how I grip the gun. I tend to take a very high grip on my revolvers (the back of the hammer hits the webbing between my thumb and forefinger when I fire DA) and that has the potential of putting pressure on the base of my thumb if the grip is too wide at the top. Thus, anything that widens the grip frame can be pure torture for me after a few rounds.

Certain grips are just awful for me, particularly S & W targets. They are quite wide at the top and, when I shoot with them, with each round fired a piece of solid wood slams into the base of my right thumb. It is as if someone at S & W deliberately designed those grips to cause me pain.

What I've discovered is that I do best with two types of grips. On anything shooting rounds more powerful than .38 Special, I do best with Pachmayr grippers. Yes, they are ugly, but they are NARROW and that's what matters most for me. Also, the rubber on Pachmayrs completely covers the grip frame and that further protects the base of my thumb. I also do well with Magna grips. They totally disappear in my hand but the narrowness of the grip keeps the grip frame from bouncing against the base of my shooting thumb on recoil. I just bought a Model 19 2 1/2". This round butt gun came equipped with original S & W round butt magnas, grips that look positively tiny when compared to the more modern Hogue rubbers. Yet, I can shoot the gun using the magnas without experiencing the slightest discomfort.
