I recently aquired a 1979 (Thanks fyimo) police trade-in Model 10...Apparently from Australia. A little rough looking but very tight and smooth. It's a shooter, and my wife's bedside companion.

I replaced the wooden grips with Pachmayr Pro Grippers. The grips I removed do not have the S&W logo on them, and have "273" stamped in the inside of the grip. They are a little rough so I assume that is what was carried in Australia.

Do any factory grips NOT have the S&W logo? Does "273" sound like an original grip for a Model 10-8?

The "273" sounds like a model number for an after market set of grips. The S&W 10-8 came with the standard magna grips. I believe that all S&W factory grips will have the S&W logo medallion in them. The factory grips on all 6 of my S&W revolvers have the S&W medallion. While all of my S&W revolvers are fine shooters my 10-8 is one of the best shooters I have.

10-8s are excellent--firing pin on the hammer, no MIM parts, no internal lock. And now someone will come along and tell me that the late 10-8s had blah, blah, blah.

Mine too.

I also purchased one of the Australian trade ins. It came in, IMO, very rough and just a little loose. The stocks have no medallions and are stamped 91, stamped into the wood, no ink. I refinished them per a members post and they look a lot better, worn like the gun but not flaking like before. She ain't pretty but she shoots like a laser.

I have three of these guns now. Two 10-8's, an one 10-10. All three came with the same manner of grips, no medallions, an large block style numbers marked/cut into the inside of the grips. One is marked 23, 41, 07. I can only assume that it was a marking for issue, plus one of them/10-8 is a round butt 4"HB. The two SB framed guns have had their grips changed out, an adapter made from our forum member here who took up slack from tyler was added.

That's how mine looked.

Yep that is how the grips on mine looked untill I refinished them. I also bought two, a RB and a SB. The SB looks worse and shoots better.
