First, congratulations on your 2 1/2" 66-1 Combat Magnum. These snub nosed K frames are getting harder to find, especially the earlier ones. Your 66-1 was the last version to have both the pinned barrel and recessed cylinder (P&R). Did yours come with the factory magna stocks? Original box and docs?

According to the Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson - 3rd Edition, your 66-1 w/ serial number 25K6543 was most likely produced in 1978.

I hope this information is what you were looking for!

Post up some pictures if you get a chance. There are a lot of us who really enjoy the Combat Magnums. Especially the snubbies. Here is a picture of my 66-1 and my 19-3...

If a modern S&W is sure to gain "classic" status it will be the Mod. 66 P&R guns in all barrel lengths.

They are the second model produced in stainless steel (following the Mod 60) and the forerunner to all the stainless guns we see available today.

They are often the favorite of those who have owned and shot them. LEO's in particular have a special appreciation of the Mod 66......:)

MacA,
Thanks for the information you provided and the picture of your 66-1 is exactly like mine in appearence. I picked up the 66-1 from the family of a deceased LEO (a brother officer) and it was truly a gun safe "closet queen" for $500. Because of the condition, I would estimate less than 100 rounds went through it. Box & all papers came with it........

What a great purchase. Not only a VERY GOOD price, but the fact of who originally owned it holds a special place in your heart! Congrats!!

MacA,

I should have added that the $500 included shipping and insurance and the fee to a FFL holder including the state background check. I figured the gun cost about $425 excluding the fee's.

Very, very nice. I am still looking for "my" snub 66. I have a 6" 66-1, a 2.5" 19-3, and a 2.5" 19-6 so I am all around it but no snub 66. I will find one though.;)

Re: Looking for information on my Smith & Wesson Model 66-1

Troops!
I am the proud owner of a Smith & Wesson .357 Magnum 2.5" Model 66-1. I managed to get it for a song & dance($500.00). I'm trying to find out the date this masterpiece was made. It also looks like the barrel is not the original as I see a slight difference in the finish in the barrel as opposed to the frame. The serial number is 96K9115. It came with an original box & paper work & cleaning kit as well (the serial numbers do not match and the box states it was for a 4" 66-1). Any help would be greatly appreciated!

My M66-1 snubbie is my most carried non J-Frame revolver.
Dates to 1980. Shoots like atarget revolver and balances like a dream.
I paid $225 for it about 14 years ago.
It's on my hip right now.

Yea, got my 66-1 way back before I got married.

And that was at least 22 years ago!

Mine's a 30kxxxx.

And that Ruger Security Six shown there was about the same time. Both have Secret Service stocks and I turned the Ruger into a RB like my 66.

Still VERY MUCH have them. Lots of my six shooters will one day be part of my, uh, retirement portfolio.

But a few, including these two, will stay till I kick the bucket.
