I'm looking at a Model 60-10 at my LGS and wondering if it's worth the $519.00 plus the Olympia's share (used). I like the full lug barrel and the fact that I can fire .38 Special and .357 Magnum in it. The three-inch barrel is a plus too. I'm not so sure about the MIM parts and all the other "improvements" of a dash ten though. What say you?

If it is in good condition...GRAB IT NOW!!!

If you look over on GunBroker you will find they now start at $700 and work UP from there.

I have two, one standard and one that was from a batch of Lew Horton guns that was Mag-Na-Ported. I use mine mainly while backpacking, hiking and anything around water.

As to the MIM parts...no issues with mine nor a dozen other Smiths I have with MIM parts..some of the smoothest lightest DA pulls I have are guns with MIM parts...

You will like it!!!

my m60 3" is one of the first with mim parts. i am not sure what "dash" it but it is a great gun. accurate and easy to carry. i usually load .38s but the .357 option can be handy. i would scoop that one up in a heart beat.

Good to hear. I just put money down on one of these and will complete the purchase a week from tomorrow.

New one bought at a LGS.

funny you ask,i was on a harley ride today and swung into a flea market in daytona.Guy had a 60-4 ,3 in.,like yours,38 cal. only.I paid 450.00,with non-original box......thought i'd stole it,been looking for one for awhile....i like the way it balances.I would have jumped at ur price as well.

...$450...there is probably a warrant out for your arrest!!!

I had one but sold it after I found a second 60-10. Had the complete set:
60-10 3" AS
60-4 3" AS
60-1 2" AS

Great price. Buy it and post photos.
I'm carrying one right now.

I've had mine for over 10 years, and its the most versatile gun I own. I think of it as the Swiss Army knife of guns. Small enough to carry concealed, big enough to shoot accurately, handles a variety of ammo from light .38s to full power .357s (although the recoil is stout; if you can shoot a box of .357s in one session you're more man than me), and weather/sweat resistant. It's the perfect hiking/backpacking/fishing companion, I load mine with a couple of shotshells for snakes, and .357s for critter protection. In short, buy it.

..that is bad.... Current going price on the auction sites is in the $700 range....they don't last long for a reason.

I just received a 60-10 parts set from a seller on GunBroker... The cylinder dropped right into one of my 60-10s and timed and headspaced perfectly... It will be going to TK Custom to be rechambered to take .38 Super and 9mm via moon clips.

Not sure but it may also run 9x23, .380 ACP and 9mm Largo.... So it may run 6 rounds with just one cylinder. Bought the extra to be machined instead of sending the original so as not degrade the eventual collector value...

like seven3 said, really easy to hit with. shoots like a larger gun and carries like a small one. i had no idea they had gotten this expensive. a lot of people don't like small 357s like the m60 or the ruger sp101. i beg to differ. they give you options. if i am checking cameras on my hunting lease or putting out corn for hogs i have a nice light gun with some smack down. i can load +p .38s for edc. all this semi auto fire power is great but i like being able to hit my target.

SuperMan,

I snoozed and lost it. Damn the bad luck :(

Sorry Fredo, it wasn't bad luck if you had the opportunity to purchase it on your initial visit. ;)

My used 60-10 ran me $500 shipped in August 2012 and I couldn't be happier, it's my favorite of all my S&W's.
It had seen more use than the prettier comparables which is why the price was somewhat lower than the market norms for that time.
That sure doesn't matter now since it's seen over a thousand rounds (nearly all .38 Spl) since I purchased it. :)

IIRC, the -9's were the first .357's and the -10's were the last before the internal lock. A very small production window for the best 'shooter' 60's IMO. :D

Mirror of my experience this spring. hesitated on a 60-10 @ LGS for $495, 4 hours later when sanity returned, the gun was gone. A month later I found another 60-10 a private party had. Cost $550, but was in better shape than the first one. One of my favorites to shoot. The MIM parts have not provided any issues or reasons to complain.

I've had a 60-4 .38 Special for many years, and as others have stated, they are about as close to a universal handgun as you can get. I don't have . 357 mag capability, but not really sure I want it, nevermind need it. I think a hard cast heavy SWC at top .38 velocity will take care of any eventualities I'm likely to encounter. I favor the old 173 grain 357429 but just got a three cavity Mihec mold for a 158 grain gas checked SWC/HP that will likely become my go-to . 38/.357 bullet for serious business. Sorry for the drift, but I can wax eloquent about my 60-4. To the OP, sorry you missed a good deal on that one, and I hope another opportunity for one comes your way. You will love it. My buddy (Nimrod 44 here on the forum) just texted me that one is coming home from a Wyoming trip with him. I think this might be his 3rd one, I know he has a -4 and whatever dash # the 5" version is. He carries that 5" constantly working on "the farm" (hunting property). Strong cottonmouth medicine.

The 357 J's are a little heavier than the preceding 38 Specials, that helps with recoil.

Not sure if this is real or not, but I prefer the internal-pin setup to the hammer-nose... seems to have a more authoritative snap to it. Could be my imagination!

Anyhoo, I regard the 60-9 and 60-10 as the best of a pretty good bunch. Not concerned about MIM at all.
