"We have researched your Smith & Wesson Model 19-3, .357 Combat Magnum, Special 4" Round Butt variation, caliber .357 magnum, revolver in our company records, which indicate that your handgun, with serial number K792xxx, was shipped from our factory on July 19th, 1969, and delivered to Don Streiker Guns, Inc. W. Allis, WI. The record indicate that this revolver was shipped with a 4" barrel equipped with a front ramp, blue finish, and checkered walnut round butt grips. The round butt frame for this revolver is one of the frames left over after filling a Navy contract for 4" round butt revolvers."

Pardon the smudges and glare...fast pictures tonight:

4-Screw,
I hope you took no offense at some Monty Python parody to make a point. Seriously, that is a neat piece. Given this model, as best I would guess, was not initially intended to be a round butt I wonder how the orientation of the serial # on the butt compares with a square butt 19-3? Is it off center? Do the grips number to the revolver? Thanks for sharing something I've never seen.

Very interesting 19-3 !

Especially that they used a snub frame and rear site with a 4" barrel.

I dont own or have any pics of the Navy contract guns ,
Were those 4" RB's built the same way or did the factory RB a standard 4" frame with the "step" down to the barrel rib with a standard rear site ?

Seems that using a 4" barrel on a snub frame is the easier way to do it although the result is a step down from the frame to the 4" barrel rib .

The 2.5" snub FS rib mates to the frame and eliminates the need for the frame to step down.

Thanks for sharing it.

PS I have a Model 27 and a Model 19-2 from the same era with yellow FS inserts.

Larry, most of these had yellow ramp inserts. You can faintly see the yellow in the picture. Thank you!

I could handle the yellow. I sure wouldn't cull it because of the color or the insert. It is still a super nice gun. I haven't ever saw but one 4 in. round butt and it was sold 5 min. before I saw it. After my post this morning I had my eyes examined and was told I need new glasses. When they arrive I will check the color again. Larry
