Hello, I'm kinda new here, but I am getting into Smith and Wesson revolvers and I'm looking at buying one that i hope the forum can help me with.

so, I have my eye on a Smith and Wesson model 49 in a pawn shop I know of. This is a "bodyguard" gun-J frame, snub-nose, 5-shot .38 with a shrouded hammer (SA/DA). This one is steel.

I've handled this one, and it appears to be in nice shape mechanically, and pretty reasonable cosmetically (for a carry piece). Magna grips. I assume the gun is stock-just looks that way.

Priced at $350, and I'm pretty sure I can knock $30 off that. Deal or no deal?

Absolutely grab it. I have both steel and alloy framed humpbacks and steel is FAR more shootable. It's true (at least for me) that they're too heavy for pants pocket carry, but I have too much other stuff to give up an entire pocket to a gun. And any difference in weight is soon forgotten in a belt holster, so just get a good one.

I know the theoretical advantages of full "hammerless" carry guns, but it's much easier to amaze your friends and mystify your enemies by hitting steel targets (for example) at 25+ yards if you can do it single action. ;)

DEAL!!!

I could possibly break my fingers by quickly getting my $ out. Move quick on this one.
I prefer the round butt on J frames as more grip options are available Pachmayer's black rubber RB or SB will fit. S&W made J frame SB walnut/rosewood targets both smooth and checkered. SB a better fit for normal to bigger hands. SB =square butt RB =round bit.

Don't hesitate don't even think about it..... go buy it now. I wpouldn't hesitate one second at that price. I've carried a Model 49 for about 40 years first as an off duty and now as an EDC but I must admit I sure like the Centennial as EDC as well.

Practice with it and it will never let you down. That ugly humpback design is perfect for concealed carry.

Grab it last Tuesday.

That would be my second choice for a carry J-frame, right behind the 640 I carry. A close second.

For me it wouldn't be too heavy for pocket carry--I've carried a steel J that way for twenty-one years. Got used to it in about the first month. You do need a pocket holster that will hold it positioned for the draw.

You will like it.

This 49 cost me $450 a couple years ago -- California dollars.

Great pocket gun:
