Smith Model 49-deal or no deal?

I paid $339 for this one... but that was in 2012. :)

I too am about to get myself one of these fine pieces to go with my Model 36. I got a 296 Ti a few weeks ago and now I want more humpbacks!

Since the last time I was here they raised the price. It's now at $400. But it is nicer than i recall. Serial J66111.

I think I'm going to wait a tad longer. It's a nice gun, and I still want it, but I have some decisions to make about how to get to it, and I have a big expense coming up soon.

To the OP, go for it. I looked at an M49 today, blued, 98% with original diamond high horns. Revolver only marked $499. Figured I could have got it OTD at $450 but left it on the shelf. Thinking I may need to reconsider.

I will need to plan a bit better to come up with this pistol. That's no problem, but have some decisions to make and some work to do. I think it will be there a bit longer.

Okay y'all! You are now all my new enablers. If it is there tomorrow i will put it on layaway.

Good decision. Make that deal.
I carried a 49 for a while and found a 649 that replaced it in rotation. Very well made SA/DA with no snagging for pocket carry. Also a pleasure to shoot in my opinion, as the weight tames a lot of recoil.
If you are planning to pocket carry, consider getting a Mika pocket holster.
Let us know how you make out.....

My '49 came from my wife's cousin. Her dad bought the gun brand new. When he passed, it went to his son-in-law. He passed and it went to his wife, the cousin. She's anti-gun so one night she comes over to the house and hands me a package in a plastic grocery bag. Boxed '49 with all papers including the receipt, price tag, and S&W cleaning kit in the sealed plastic bag. She said, "It's yours". I suggested she keep it and she said, "No". I said "You might need it for protection, I'll be glad to teach you how to shoot". She said, "No". I said, "Can I pay you for it?" Again, she said, "No". With the gun she hands me a box of Remington .38 Special 158 gr. LRN cartridges. Five rounds fired from the box. In all the years, her dad was the only one who ever fired that gun. After a thorough cleaning, you can hardly tell it's even been fired. This is one gun I plan on keeping as a safe queen.

I got this one for $185...... in 1985.

Carried it for many years on and off duty (and it looks it!). Still carry it today in retirement.

I totally dig yours. All business. How do you like those grips?

Do you find you have a hard time getting wadcutters in when reloading? Seems like it would be difficult. I've never really tried it under pressure or trying to do it fast.

^ The Hogue grip makes it much easier to shoot. It gives me just enough of an increase in trigger to backstrap distance. Used to use boot grips, but they were a little bit too small.
I don't pocket-carry anymore so the full size grips don't bother me.

Never had a problem with wadcutters and speed loaders when qualifying, but have never tried doing it really fast. I have a Saeco 358-162-SWC mold that I might try with the speed loaders.

(I will admit to using nothing but a Cramer 358-141-WC mold with 2.7 gr of Bullseye since 1977.)

Looks like you painted your front sight too. I did that to my 442. I just use white though.

All my front sights are "Traffic Cone" Orange. About the only color my old eyes can see anymore.

And to the OP: Buy That M49! You will not regret it.
