In my opinion, one of the best small game field guns available has been the Model 48. Firing the .22 WMR, it packs the punch of a .22LR rifle, but from a handgun. Easily carried in the field and quite accurate - who needs a rifle?

This specimen shipped in 1976. It's no secret that I'm a fan of the .22 WMR; I have 3 rifles chambered for it, and two revolvers, the other one being a Ruger Single Six old model convertible.

I think the Model 48 fills a unique niche, and fills it well. How about you?

Nice gun! Best small game revolver? Not sure about that, I think the 16-4 might have an edge in that respect. Not that I don't like 48s; have three 8 3/8 and a four inch, still looking for a six. Maybe trade you one of the 8 3/8 for your six? Here's the last one and oddly enough it came with pre-war service stocks which have gone to a Forum member for his K22 Outdoorsman.

I agree it may be best for a non-reloader. The 16-4 walks away with that trophy if handloads are included. 16-1, -2, -3 come in a close 2nd.

Having a number of model 48's in all barrel lengths,
I would agree that the 48 is a great all-around revolver
for woods carry or target.

The 8 3/8" version is probably the most accurate revolver
I have ever owned, regardless of caliber. I have a terrible
weakness for anything 8 3/8" in Smith and have owned
several of these. My current one in model 48 is a No-Dash
with all T's and capable of centering a marshmellow at 50 feet if I do my job.

Have several in 6-inch and they get used for plinking a bit more
than the 4".

The 4" version is a great woods carry piece, especially with
a couple of CCI Shot Shells installed for Mr. Rattlesnake.

While a bit heavier and larger than a model 651 or 51 to carry, it makes up for this by being a bit steadier to hold.

My only beef with the 48 is the price of .22 Mag versus .22 LR. I do have a .22 LR cylinder that fits the 4" 48, but the Mag cylinder is more accurate.

Pretty gun, but in a cartridge I detest in a handgun.

Much better small game guns include the M34, K22 and any Colt Woodsman; all in 22lr, of course.

I love shooting and hunting with k22’s with my 17-3 with 8 3/8” barrel as my pick . Then you think about all the critters that one got with that 48 and I have to say yes it’s the best but .... Oh well are ties allowed? Let’s just say they’re one fine looking/shooting critter getter !!
