.22 Magnum Revolver

What models did Smith Make? Seems very limited in new ones. Actually if new, only the Model 48 in 4" would probably interest me as I do not have a 4" K Frame.

For an older one, what does everyone recommend, again probably in 4". Is there a S/S model that is no longer made?

IMO, the Mod. 63 would be really hard to beat. Expect to have to open the wallet pretty wide though!

Model 648= K-frame 22 Magnum in stainless. Don’t know anything about variations, numbers produced, or current prices/availability. Bought a cylinder only during a Custom build project.

There is also a 22 Mag version of the Model 63, but I don’t remember the Model number or anything else about it. See SCSW for details.

The Mod 650 and the mod 651. The 651 was target sights, the stainless version of the Mod 51. All J Frames.

22 Magnum

There’s not a big selection of S&W revolvers chambered in 22 Winchester Magnum. There is the blue steel M48 and the stainless steel M648 in the medium K frame.

Several more in the small J frame revolvers. There’s the M51 in blue, the M650 fixed sight stainless, the M651 stainless, the air weight M351PD, and the M351C air weight centennial.

I’m trying hard to covert my stimulus check to a model 651 4” kit gun.

Mod34: The model 63 is truly a delightful little revolver but it is chambered in 22 long rifle not 22 magnum.

I believe that there is a 63 in .22 mag. I had one.

Although I have a Model 48, I prefer the Model 51 for carry.

Rumor has it that you could get a 22 lr cylinder factory fitted to a 651 or 648, but I have seen some folks use a 22mag cylinder with their 63's....And, you could get a 22 mag cylinder the the model 53 Jet (as well as 22 lr inserts - IIRC)

I just scratched the 648 from my short list. Seems you’d want at least a 6” barrel for the 22WMR.

I just got this little J frame 351PD 22 magnum earlier this week. It's not a stainless gun, in fact it's mostly aluminum (alloy), with a steel barrel and internals. I was originally looking at the 351C hammerless, but the reports of a very heavy trigger steered me to the PD model. It's got quite a heavy trigger of it's own in DA, but the typical sweet single action that's closer to 2lbs (WAG there, have not dug out my trigger gauge yet)

I think I would also like to have a K frame 4" 22 WMR to go with it. But the airweight is perfect for carrying around the yard, now that copperheads are starting to move about. (No so much this week, we're supposed to get a freeze warning over the next night or two)

The airweights magnums are not cheap revolvers, but the stainless versions are probably twice the price. I'm not sure if the 648 even comes with a 4" barrel, but that would be my next pick. However I will be keeping this one too.

M-63 chambered for the .22 Magnum

Although S&W never advocated this modification there have been many who did it or had it done, S&W would fit a .22 LR cylinder to a "J" Frame .22 Magnum revolver but not vice versa. I have a M-617-1 fitted with an additional .22 Mag. cylinder and I traded for a M-63 already fitted with a Mag. cylinder but neither were offered from S&W as original from the factory revolvers. So mod34 is correct I just thought his statement should be clarified.

No, the 648 didn’t come with a 4” barrel and I think it weighs about 50-52 ounces. She’s definitely a pig.

22 Magmun

Smith & Wesson made only ONE model chambered for the "22 Magnum", the model 53! Remington nicknamed it "the Jet" to prevent this confuuuzzzion! They made many models chambered for the "22 MRF" (Magnum Rimfire) or WMR (Winchester Magnum Rimfire), mods 51, 48, 650, 651, 648, 351PD, 351C.

Tough to beat a 48-4. Its going to be the most plentiful of 22 mrf you can find but they still are not cheap if in great condition. Mine is a great shooter in excellent condition. I also have a spare cylnder in 22 lr but did not put into my picture but it gives you best of both the worlds. Good luck with your quest.

I have only one 22 magnum revolver.

It's the fixed sight 650.

I found it hard to see the stock sights in daylight. Painted the front sight orange and that helped.

I got a set of Crimson Trace laser grips for it but haven't put them on yet.

Some of these came with a 22LR extra cylinder, but I don't have one.

I have 0 22 magnums. I do have a J frame 22 and a spare cylinder for it. Might ream it to 22 mag and fit it just to have one.

I bought a 48-2 several years ago. I was attracted to it because it was a fairly rare all target model. I never fired it, nor do I think anyone else did. Beautiful revolver, but it just didn't fit my collection. It will reside in the safe until I can sell it.
