Hi!

I'm a newbie to revolvers - just joined a police revolver league and also shoot Bullseye and am looking for a Model 14.

There are so many variants, but most shooters I've spoken with recommend 14-3, 14-4, 14-5 and 14-6.

I know that 3 and 4 have a half lug and 5 and 6 have a full lug. Other than that, what are the differences?

The barrel is the main thing. For a target gun, I’d be looking for a 14-5 with the full-lug barrel. It will have a square-butt frame, which I prefer. I think the 14-6 will have a round-butt frame. Either one should do a great job for you, providing you can get stocks you like for whichever gun you end up buying,
 
I have a 8 3/8" barrel dash 4, but a friend who borrowed it wanted a shorter barrel. I found a used 6" dash 3. If you can tell the difference in mechanical accuracy between the two, I'll kiss your...ah, target...

Both will shoot bullseye "possibles" from a rest. Sometimes they do it with someone holding the gun one-handed! Both seem to prefer unsized cast lead 148gr DEWC over HP38.

The 14-5/6/7 with the underlug are the way to go. Made for the Police Distinguished match, add some taller sights and you can get neckhold at fifty for PPC. There is one for sale on this forum . Ive shot them for years, the weight is about perfect as you get for a production revolver. If you get a nice used one you wont be disappointed.

I was amazed to realize that up until the arrival of the full underlug, there was no under barrel lug on the Masterpiece series of pistols. :eek: from their first post-War release up through at least the 14-3, and I believe the 14-4, the barrels went from light (“narrow rib”) to heavy, but always with nothing underneath except the front locking lug. The “half lug” began with the Model 19, but AFAIK was never offered by the factory of the Model 14s. This revelation came when I began examining frames for custom builds. I could be wrong and have been before, but I believe this is correct.

Nope. They went from no underbarrel lug to full lug.

I really like the 4" guns. I don't have a 4" 14 full lug to shoot.
