What models were the football target grips used on s&w n frame revolvers? ( m28/m27?)

I’m trying to match the correct grips to the revolver.

I don't think it was so much a model as a time period. When they went to football cutouts they went on, any N frame getting targets. 28s normally came with magnas, but if you ordered a 28 with targets during that time period I have no doubt that you would have gotten footballs. I have a variety of N frames with footballs, a couple 28-2s a 29-3 a 57-1 a 27-2
These are the original footballs that came on this 25-5

You'll need to know the vintage of the revolver. It might be newer than football targets. You'll want the correct washers on the back of the medallions as well.

As always with things S&W, you will see a lot of overlap in the list below. Serial number ranges would have to be interpolated by model from the years given:

TARGET STOCK STYLE VARIATIONS – ESTIMATED TIME FRAME RANGES:

A) Early non-relieved smooth Rosewood and other wood "Coke Bottle" stocks. Black washer, early 50's, special-order-only-applications, scarce. The bottom flare and long trigger guard area are indicative. Pg 23 SCSW, 3rd ed. The SCSW mentions in the history section for stocks, that Cokes were introduced for both K and N frames in the mid-50's. They were made smooth and checkered, and the K frame checkered are scarce.

B) Non-Relieved checkered w/diamond Targets. Black washer, 1952 until about 1958.

C) Relieved ("football cutout") checkered w/diamonds and smooth Targets. Black washer, 1956 until about 1968; w/o diamonds as late as 1974 although most were used up by 1972.

D) Relieved (N "Coke bottle") Target” stocks with Black washer were specific to .44 Magnum thru the 29-2 models and early years of the Model 57. Special order only on pre 24s, 27s, etc., 1956 until 1967-68. “Special oversize stocks” on the 41 and 44 Magnums were phased out beginning in early 1966 and replaced by diamond target stocks made of goncalo alves. Bill (Doc44)

E) Smooth (presentation) Goncalo Alves, relieved. Black washers, used 1967 to 1980.

F) Relieved ("football") checkered w/o diamond, Targets. Stainless washer, 1970 until
about 1982.

G) Relieved ("football presentation") Targets. Silver
washer. 1979 until about 1981. These have the "football"
shaped cartridge relief on the left side and the engraving
cut out on the right side and lack checkering.

H) "Speed Loader" Targets. Silver washer. 1980 until about
1991, and infrequently thereafter. Often on L & K frames.
These are cut out for enhanced clearance on
the left side for a speedloader, the scallop exposes
the revolver frame. Late in this issue, the medallion
washer was deleted and the medallions are more or less
force fit into a hole bored in the stocks and the 'alignment
circle' is milled into the wood.

I) "Speed Loader" Presentation Targets. Silver washer. 1979
until about 1991, and infrequently thereafter. These are
cut out for an enhance clearance on the left side for a
speedloader, the scallop exposes the revolver frame.
There is an engraving cut out on the right side. Common
on commemoratives, limited run guns and presentation
pieces. They usually lack checkering but checkered versions have been confirmed. These can show up on ‘over run’ guns.

Correction: The black stock washers used until 1973; after that have an unfinished metal appearance. Around 1984/85, the stock circle was discontinued by S&W.

- Black Washer, Non-Relieved Targets. 1952 until about 1956 Scarce.

- Black Washer, Relieved (or "football") Targets. 1956 until about 1970. Not common.
Early non-relieved smooth Rosewood and other wood Coke Bottle early 50s & checkered relieved cokes. JJC

- Silver Washer, Relieved (or "football") Targets. 1970 until about 1982. Relatively common.

- Silver Washer, Relieved (or "football") Presentation Targets.
1970 until about 1982. These have the "football" shaped
cartridge relief on left side and cut out on the right side for the logo stamp on the sideplate. Relatively common.

- Silver Washer, "Speed Loader" Targets. 1980 until about 1991, and infrequently thereafter.
Often on L- frames as well as K's. These are cut out for an enhance clearance on
the cylinder side for a speed loader and the scallop exposes
the revolver frame. A lot of these around. Late in this issue,
the medallion washer actually went away and the
medallions are more or less force fit into a hole bored in the
stocks and the 'alignment circle' is milled into the wood.
Common.

N-frame target stocks without the relieved area on the left panel were shipped until sometime in 1958. Target stocks with black oxide stock circles were shipped until sometime in 1974, although most were used up by the end of 1972. The rest looks correct to me.

C) Relieved ("football cutout") checkered w/diamonds and smooth Targets. Black washer, 1956 until about 1968; w/o diamonds as late as 1974 although most were used up by 1972.

Relieved ("football cutout") checkered w/diamonds target stocks came on a ~1967 S-prefix Model 28-2 that came to me recently. Seller said he bought the gun new and the stocks are original to the 28-2. I rarely see diamond football target stocks!

They were used from ~1955 until the diamond was deleted in mid-1968.
