What say you? I am familiar with N frame pricing these days but not a 5 " Trying to work a deal. What if any is the price of a 5" over 4" or 6"

I'm definitely not among the experts here, but my feeling is that the 6" seems to be on the low end of desirability and therefore pricing (however, I love my 6"pre model number gun). 3.5" seem to bring the highest premium with 4" right there too. I believe 4" examples to be the scariest, only made for 2 years as I recall. I think 5" guns are probably 3rd on the "highly favored" list. 6.5" guns are not common, either. I'm not sure where the long tubes fall on the scale. As far as a dollar amount, I don't know - as usual, condition is everything, plus value of box, accessories.

I think the condition would have a greater impact on value premium versus barrel length. For me I’d probably pay a little more for the 3.5” than the others, and a little less more for the 5” over 4 & 6 inch guns.

Going off of memory here, but I think the 5 inch 27s were the most common, and the 4 inch the most scarce. Personally I really like 5 inch Nframes, I think they are the perfect barrel length. Would I pay a premium for it? Probably not, I'd be looking (as previously mentioned) more at condition.

Of the three lengths, the 6" is by far the most common. The 5" was a standard length but is less common and more sought after, so figure 20% higher than a 6".

The 4" 27-2 was made in fairly large numbers (and many in nickel) toward the end of this variant's production run, into the transitional period with unpinned barrels and recessed cylinders. Values seem to be close to the 5" for these.

Ok. what I am looking at and offered a price is a 27 - 2 5" nickel like new presentation case and papers and tools. I am a sucker for N frames and gotta have one in each color as a collector firearm not a shooter. Thanks!

That would bring $1700-$2300
Around here. It would sell faster if it was blue
But there are fewer of them so it would bring a
Premium.
This is just my area I am sure it would
bring more in N.Y. City.

With what you are describing I think Dave .357 is right on the money. Please post pics when purchased. I recently bought a very nice blued 27-2 for $1200 and felt like I got a really good deal. I have been looking for one for months and they don't pop up in the classifieds that often.

FWIW

Model 27s

5" guns were cataloged from 1957-1979"
4" guns were "special order" only until 1979 when the 3 1/2" and 5 " guns were dropped from the catalogue and the 4" was added.
After 1982 the 27-3 eliminated the P&R features.

Don't know about MurphyDog's "large numbers" but do know they were competing against S&W new L-frame 686/586 and 681s which I believe were more popular than the N-frame during the 80s.

I have a "nice" 4"27-2 from 1980/81 that is has the recessed cylinder but does not have a pinned barrel

Speaking of the Presentation cases, the 3.5” brings a substantial premium and the 5” case also brings a premium, just not as much as the 3.5 incher, so keep that in mind.

If you offered that to me for $1200 you would
be putting my money in your wallet and I would
be taking your gun to the farm.

I wouldn't sell it for twice that much.
Not only is it beautiful my brother wore it to his graduation from the
Police Academy but he also wore it when his office was assigned to back
up the Secret Service when President Reagan came to visit Salt Lake City.

He replaced the smooth target grips with these beautiful presentation grips.

Back in the day it was his favorite Smith & Wesson.

S&W 27-2 .357 Magnum - 5"

Here's a couple of 5" 27-2s that I have. Both came with the wood case & tools. I only shoot the nickel one, so I have since installed a red ramp insert. They are really nice shooting guns, & yes the 3.5" is most desirable. Actually the coolest of all 27's! I have the nickel in a 50's version as well, and probably would not sell the nickel guns (my favorites)!:D
