Just got a styrofoam clamshell presentation box with a 29-2 from GB. The latch doesn't look like any on other boxes I've seen. Can anybody I'd the box and possible value? The imprint is in the top and bottom. Thanks

The latch on your presentation is correct. It is made by SMS in England and was first used on cases in 1957. It is one of three styles used by S&W on their cases from 1957 through the mid-1960s.

The first photo below shows the latch on a presentation case dating to March 1958. The second photo shows the presentation case and accessories that are correct for your Model 29-2.

The gun is a N3xxxxx sn which dates it at 1975-76 i believe. A box wasn't listed in the ad so I was surprised when it came with the gun. Obviously it's not the correct box. Not sure if I should sell it and look for the correct one or just keep it as it seems it's a rare one. Suggestions?

Welcome to the Forum! Lots of .44 Magnum and Model 29 fans here, and we would appreciate seeing some pics of your new revolver. Mahogany presentation cases like the one you got with your Model 29-2 can bring $150-$200+. It appears that all the blue flocking on the liners has disintegrated, but that can be replaced. You can contact one of the Forum's resident expert craftsmen that specializes in restoring these types of cases (jcelect). Joe does excellent work for a fair price. However, if you're a DIY guy, you can try to recover the liners yourself. Personally, I have never seen the types of latches on your case and don't have any of this style on my presentation cases. But Doc44 is our guru when it comes to .44 Magnum revolvers and accessories, so you can trust what he says about the latches. Enjoy that new Model 29-2.

Thanks for the info. I've been shooting only pistols for years but pulled my old 29-3 6 inch out a few weeks ago and got the bug to start shooting revolvers again. I bought a 66-2 with box and papers and have been having fun shooting 357's but I've been wanting a 29-2 for a while. Can't find a flaw on this one. The correct box has the plastic bottom I believe so a rebuilt one with new plastic seems to be the option. This old clamshell styrofoam box is correct for a pre -29 I think?
