So some nice gentlemen that I found a couple jobs for this summer gave me a $250 gift certificate to Scheel's, So it was a nice day I told my wife let's go for a ride and I'll pick up some reloading supplies with the gift certificate and go to supper, So you can't go into shields without going in and looking at the used nicer guns and there was 2 really nice 27-2 nickel with 6 inch barrels one on each end of the serial number range and I was really interested in the early one and then I scanned the rest of the glass case and something unusual caught my eye I couldn't see the serial number well enough I thought it was 6 digits and I thought that gun should have a 6 inch barrel not a 6 1/2 inch, but I was wrong it turned out to be a 5 digit and about 98% or better condition my question is are these "Magna Grips" original To this model 29-2? They are a little rough and compared to the condition of the gun leads me to think they're not original.

These were just some quick pictures on the counter, I don't get to pick it up until close to the weekend thank you Illinois....

I wouldn’t shoot 44 mag with magnas. I’ve not been into this long enough, but Pretty much all of the 29-2s I’ve seen I’ve come with targets. I get some target grips. Shooting 44 mag, the back of that trigger guard will slam harder into your middle finger a little harder.

Nice one, you must have been in the Springfield store?? they do have several nice nickel 27-2's, LOL

Nice 29-2.
My bet is your gun came with football cut non diamond checkered GA targets stocks.
If you remove the stocks the right panel should have a serial stamped inside it.
If it matches your serial they were shipped on your gun but my bet is no.

My two 4" 29-2s wear Magnas. Both came to me with target stocks which are now long gone as they are too big for my hands. But..I only shoot my 29s with mid range cast bullet handloads so recoil with the smaller grips is not a problem :)

99.5% chance that it shipped with target stocks and someone swapped them out, maybe for rubber stocks, and sold/lost/threw away the target stocks, then slapped on a set of Magna's to make it more attractive to the next buyer. The standard stocks for the 29-2 were the target stocks, it would have taken a special order to get one shipped with Magna stocks.

Jeep1...I think you mean Scheel's. Sounds like they get quite a few nice firearm trade-ins, unfortunately for me all of their stores are located in the Midwest/West. Unless you have small hands, be careful when shooting .44 Magnum rounds. The recoil will drive the trigger guard into your middle and ring fingers...ouch! As others have stated, a standard 29-2 would have shipped with GA checkered target stocks. Congratulations, you acquired a very nice .44 Magnum, ca. 1973.

I hate auto correct, but I'm not much of a keyboard warrior either, I'm usually three steps ahead of my brain and don't look back, I'll slow down when they close the casket lid. I told the family that when my time comes to bury me with a 629 and my Gerber's because if I wake up I'm coming out of there because I don't have time to lay around!

I know those grips could not be an actual match to this gun because the gun is 98 or 99% and a grips are not, who knows why they were changed out. Doc, I greatly appreciate your input, But I am disappointed that we did not get the picture though........:)

Yes, I like they way Magnas look but they can be a bit less than optimum with heavier loads.
I had them on this 586 for a while but it wasnt quite as much fun especially using .357.

Unfortunately, the S&W Mothership had an issue with N-frame grips. The magnas were on the small side for the .41 and .44 mag guns (no issue with .357, .44 spec, or .45 Colt), but the targets are like holding a 2"x2". Goldilocks grips didn't exist in factory form.

The Model 29-2 would have shipped in 1973 with target stocks made of Goncalo alves. Photo below is of a Model 29-2, N71565, shipped in March 1973. The stocks are original to the revolver. Click on the photo for a closer look.

100% pristine beauty!

Had a 4 inch 29-2 I put magnas and a t-grip on. Using 270 grain Hornadays it shot just fine. My Keith commemorative had a bit of a sting with the smooth magnas but is much better with the stags and tgrip.
