I just purchased this one and should have it in my hands by early next week.

I had never seen anything like this and wondered if any of you have?

Apparently this is a non functioning (cylinder does not open and action does not cycle) Model 58 and is marked "DUMMY" on the butt where a serial number would typically be.

The seller tells me that it weighs and feels just like a functional M58

My guess is if it is was made by S&W maybe it was ordered as a training tool when the M58 came out for a Law Enforcement agency??

Thoughts/Comments??

I do not believe that was done by S&W. It is not uncommon for police departments to "de-mil" revolvers used for training purposes. The ground off back-strap leads me to believe that it at one time was owned by a police department, one of those which did adopt the Model 58 as a duty weapon.

The likely reason the cylinder won't open is the pin portion of the bolt has probably been shortened so it can't push the center-pin out of engagement with the frame.

What do you mean by "action does not cycle"? Cylinder doesn't rotate, won't cock, no double-action? If any of these is true it wouldn't have served very well as a training aid!

Just curious what you paid for this "paper weight", and why would you have bought it?

The seller states:
"The cylinder will not open and the action does not function"

I'll know more when it arrives.....sorry, cannot give more info at this time!

But you may be correct that the serial number was removed as well as any backstrap marking.

No Police Armorer would remove a serial number.

What are you seeing that relates to the “…ground off back-strap…”?

I was watching the listing on GB but to rich for me for a non-firing model. I did some researching, and it seemed like it was made by S&W for manufacturers in the industry for holsters, boxes, etc ... like other members had commented about in the previous linked posting. Still a neat collectible
