Can anyone help me identify a 4 inch Smith & Wesson model 10–7 that I recently found. To finish is like a blue satin that’s very dull, the frame and cylinder both display 8568X but under the grip, it shows a serial number of AAV0981. Underneath the crane on the front of the trigger it has 2 letters and right below it has 4 numbers. JP or JF and 3781 under the letters. On the bottom of the grip near that serial number, it has the engraving of Georgia, VT. It sounds like Smith shipped this gun overseas and it came back to this country. Any help would be great.

There was talk that these CAI guns came from Puerto Rico or somewhere in South America. Some of the ones I've seen had pitting/rust, indicating a wet or tropical climate.

I'm guessing both, as I've seen these guns with and without import stamps. And a PR gun wouldn't need a stamp since it's a US territory.

Sportsmans Warehouse was selling these a few years ago. With or without import stamps, they looked to be in the same condition. So, I assumed they all came from CAI around the same time frame.

A S&W letter is the only way to know where it was shipped to.

How come the serial number is not typical S&W for the period on Model 10's? Nothing is listed in the blue book of Gun Values. (Serial or Overseas shipping)

I'm not sure what book you're using. Most use S&W Standard Catalog. Based on the serial number, it dates to around 1985. The 2" model 10 I picked-up from Sportsmans Warehouse (which I assumed was in these batches) dated to the early 80's.
