Went to a very small local show in a three-stall fire station. A table holder had one of Donna's pie containers. She gives everybody homegrown pumpkin pies on a regular basis.

Once in a while I find machine gun stuff at these events; this time it was a drum for the Russian DP 28 and some corrosive 8mm fodder from just after WW 2.

And......a S&W 19-3, Texas Ranger....I checked at GunsInternational about these.....I had never heard of this variation. Mfgr. seems to be 1973. Has a narrowed trigger guard, smooth trigger, wide checkered hammer and big smooth grips. There is a serial #'rd to the gun Case 5" (??) scabbard style knife fitted into the same display box.

Now the problem......this box looks like it was under pile of nuts & bolts as it rode from Texas to WVa. I can't imagine there would ever be a loose box somewhere on this or any other planet.....

But I'm gonna ask anyway......!!!!!!????? I would be real interested in a correct wooden box.

I would not let the box condition (which could be refinished) negate the purchase of the gun / knife combo if you want it - although you admit you had no idea of this commemorative model or mentioned the price, condition of gun & knife, etc.

Yes, it was made in 1973. 8,000 units were produced with the serialized knife and presentation case.

SWCA 5th Edition indicates a value of $750. "Add 10% premium for serial numbers under 1000, and those sold through the Texas Ranger Commission."

I think that pricing is very low. I have not seen them sell in that range for a long, long time. The last nine plain sets (knife, gun, case) that I have seen sell on GB were in the $915 - $2,600 range with the average in the $1,800 range. There are bargains out there if you are really patient and diciplined...

I have not seen one of the 50 deluxe engraved sets trade hands for a while.

They are great guns and a very cool package.

A Five Inch Model 19 is way cool. Jim Bowie and most of those old time rangers would regard that little "Bowie Knife" as just about right for a table knife, but it is pretty. I was just getting interested in handguns when that set first came out , but as a second year public school teacher, it was out of reach. Of course that would be true of a lot of guns I wish I had owned.

Richard is right. That pricing is extremely low. I can't believe the 5th edition didn't it closer to correct. Of course, we can't expect them to get EVERY gun correct. The last 3 regular packages I saw, sold for $1726-$1789. I love this set. The 50 deluxe engraved sets are unobtainium, at least until Richard gives up one of his fine sets!:p JK of course.

I'm kind of surprised that you have never heard of the 1973 Texas Ranger Commemorative set...it's probably one of the most popular and finest made S&W commemoratives. I picked up my set (TR6362) a few years ago for a great price, partly due to the fact that the Model 19-3 had been shot, and the box was a little beat up. It didn't matter to me because I'm not a commemorative collector and intended to shoot the revolver. It didn't take much to restore the box and refinish it, and I did refresh the "gold" stampings with a Forster's Bonanza Gold Inlay Fill Kit from Brownell's. The blued 4" bbl. Model 19-3 in the TR set is an outstanding revolver, and IMHO one of the best Model 19s that S&W ever produced. You mentioned the revolver's particular features, and I really like all of them. I've never seen a TR box for sale by itself, so if you're a DIY guy, restore it. If not, perhaps one of our Forum experts (e.g. Joe Cebull, aka jcelect) could help you if you don't want to tackle the job yourself. I think that the quoted SCSW valuation is very low...even though mine is not ANIB, it's still in excellent condition, and I wouldn't think of selling my set for less than $1500. How about posting some pictures of your set? Good luck, and enjoy!

I would be a buyer all day long at that price. I have not seen one under $1000 for a while

Because my friend, you have already bought most of them :D

Back in the 1970s a Deluxe Texas Ranger Commemorative set is the first Commemorative Smith & Wesson that I ever saw

It was in Lew Horton's shop in MA

Even though I was not yet old enough to purchase a handgun, I knew back then that I had to own one of these beautiful revolvers

For your reference I am posting the and slick for the product

They really are great packages, and the 50 Deluxe engraved ones are something special. This is TR 40

S&W also made some 6" Texas Ranger barrels. I am not sure if they ever shipped a 6" TR commemorative from the factory; however, a member of the forum purchased a 6" barrel and had his gunsmith install it on TR 1734 and I purchased it from the member after the barrel swap. It is one-of-a-kind cool...

A few years ago, another of the 6" TR barrels came for sale, and I purchased that one (I'm still waiting to see if something comes along that "needs" the barrel).

Richard, I don't think I ever remember seeing you post this package before. It's way COOL! Thanks for sharing.

A couple years ago I sold my very clean TR commemorative revolver only for $900 including the required ffl fee even for ftf sales. It had an amazing action and was very accurate. The only commemorative I had that regret selling.

I am enjoying this thread. I am small time in the S&W field. My first was an M-41 when they first came out, early 1970's??? I think it was $79.95 retail???

The TR box I have is not just dented but has numerous scrapes. I would like to get it refinished if someone could direct me to whomever???

I really like the 6" barrel TR gun pictured above. I am on the trail of a box and a 6' Version to go in one or other of the boxes I hope to end up with would be a real bonus to this adventure. If anyone knows of a 6" gun, lemme know!!!!!!...with or without a box.

I will try to get some picts asap...I have a request to supply some MG stuff to an heir (have to find and ship some trinkets) and Donna's latest MG purchase paperwork has come in, so we must make a short trip to pick everything up.

I found a TR box with a bowie in it a few years back. Nice box with a few dents.Ended up being the wrong bowie but it was same size in new condition.
Sold both for $250.00

Oddly enough I did at one time own a used TR but had sold it a few months before I found the box.

Wish I kept the gun as they are a very deeply blued gun with options that I really like and would want on a M19 . If I find another shooter TR I will likely buy it.
