I will start it off with this nice cherry model 10-5 in nickel from the Detroit PD with a 5" barrel.
I am curious how many will surface here and if they are different in barrel length from mine.
Peter.

Both of my folks has the model 15 that they got when they were working on the force. What does the numbers at the end of Detroit Police mean?

This one is from 1948. I installed the MOP grips but I have the originals which are serial numbered to the gun:

Perusing this thread made me wonder about all of the Detroit PD marked Glock 22's that are flooding the market right now (DPD went to the S&W M&P). Something tells me that 50-60 years from now there will NOT be a thread on Glock Talk with people showing off their beautiful and historical PD guns. Of course I could be wrong (but I don't think so).

Ok just picked up my new toy sorry can't get pictures up until I get back from Dc next sat but since I can't jinx myself now it is a Winchester model 97 matching numbers factory riot Marked DPD with a copy of its DPD inventory record. It is in great shape for being used by the department and it was an academy gun for a while too.

I know this is a S&W Forum, but YOU were the guy that put the photos of the greatest little 2-inch of all times in there! The COLT DETECTIVE SPECIAL - 6 SHOT - my off duty carry piece, and still my consealed weapon carry of choice. YEAH! Let's hear it for the Colt Detective Special. What a beautiful weapon!

Nice, and a round butt, too. I assume that's the one Cabela's had (it looks like it, anyway). I wonder how many other DPD Model 12s are out there. I would imagine they're pretty scarce.

I got a great deal on it.
It was pretty dirty, lets say real dirty, but it cleaned up real nice. Functions perfect!
Grips, and everything match.

DPD has it listed as a Smith & Wesson officers police special.

I new it was an older gun as it is a 5 screw gun. It looks to be fired very little hardly a drag line on the cylinder and the bore looks beautiful. I know the gun was issued at retirement in 1966. He didn't get a checked in date or if it was issued for duty use as he wanted to get back to me so I would have an idea on bidding. (Haven't had time to get the info now.)

I added the grips as the one's that were on it looked like the target grips with the thumb shelf on the .45 conversion a few posts up. I believe these are the correct era for the gun but once again not sure.

So guys what is it I was thinking an M&P but what the hell do I know. I never herd of a S&W officers or Police Special it is chambered in .38 special. The & in the stamping on the side is a funny shape really elongated. Pictures are a little ******. It has a good shine although in a few spots it looks like somebody used steel wool to clean it I cleaned it up with flitz but might look for a professional opinion if it can be cleaned up without damaging the finish.

AeroJoe - I am waiting to take possession of this Detroit Police Pre Model 10 Snubnose in nickel. The DPD Property Number is 10012; well used; the nickel is wearing thin but it still has class and character, and it comes with the holster that was supposedly issued with it.

I was born in DeTROIT in the early 1950's, and it was a much different place than it has become today. It was Motor City long before it became Motown. I moved far away before the riots began but still have kin there.
The pics of the police revolvers are interesting to look at. Would like to get one for my collection, but don't know where to start. The handgun laws here in Colorado are a lot different than I remember Michigan's being. Any helpful hints or suggestions would be appreciated. Im in process of renewing my C&R. Im sure many of these would be C&R eligible. Anyway.. Thanks... Dun

Nice call box WhiteCoyote. Identical to the ones I used in the late 70s while walking a beat in the 7th Precinct. The last one I used was at E Grand Blvd and Gratiot across from a Coney Island where I ate on occassion.
I actually miss those days. Walking a beat is very interesting and keeps you more in touch with the community.

I used to hear a lot of "Ben Turpin" stories from the old timers in the neighborhood while walking.

Ben Turpin was one of Detroit's first black officers and is a legend on Detroit's east side. He carried two 45 caliber revolvers and was to have made his own bullet proof vest from a piece of boiler plate with leather straps. Naturally he worked one of the highest crime areas in Detroit, that being the old "Black Bottom" of "Paradise Valley". Other wise known as Hastings street and surrounding area. This I believe was part of the old "Hunt Street Precinct" which later became precinct #7.
Story goes that he actually killed one of the Purple Gang. He also ran a youth baseball league, much like the current day police athletic leagues.

A little nostalgia from nova printex. I bet you won't find these at the typical police collector shows...or wold you?

This has nothing to do with Detroit.....But shortly after this photo was taken, I thought I was going get to witness an actual caning. The guy in the hat tried to sell me some weed and his sister on a back alley in Nassau. So I snitched on him to the Bahamian police....Alas, it must take more to get a caning than dope peddling and pimping. The very polite policeman is carrying a piece of cane about 36 inches long with a metal band on one end. No gun, just the cane.

Remington 870? High Standard?

The gun that won the West (side). East side too! During efforts to suppress the "urban rebellion", cops didn't appreciate having to wear white helmets which drew fire to their noggins, hence the efforts at ghetto expedient camouflage pictured here.

Here we have a "come as you are" gun. Another interesting thing about these pictures: No name tags. Try to put down a riot now without name tags and audio and video 24/7.

It's possible that model 94 is a DPD issue. I grew up in Detroit but at the time I was eligible to join the police department, 1973, there was huge racial tension in the City, as the police chief was running for mayor against a state senator named Coleman Young. Anyway, I ended up in Indianapolis, where about 25 years later I met a Glock instructor who was retired DPD. We had a great afternoon talking about my home town, and swapping stories. He spent a number of years on the firearms training unit, and told me of the first day he spent on the unit. He was deep into the sub basement of the Headquarters building downtown and happened upon racks and racks of brand new Winchester Model 94 rifles, along with pallets of ammunition. Turns out the rifles and ammo had been placed there by the War Department during WWII. There was concern about the Nazis staging an invasion through Canada, and the thinking was that American citizens would be very familiar with the Model 94, so the government had stocked a number of police departments along the northern border with rifles and ammunition. My new friend told me when he retired from DPD in the early 90's the rifles and ammo were still there. Of course these would have been pre '64 Winchesters, and who knows what they would have been worth. I never heard another word about the fate of those fine rifles. Maybe they are still there, awaiting an invasion from the north.

Don't own a PD marked gun but have my Dad's old model 10-5 4" pencil barrel unmarked duty gun. Up here in the wilderness that's called "New England" we don't seem to mark our guns like the big city does. I do find these old PD gun threads most interesting though.

What are those Detroit Police Department marked 5: Nickle plated S&W 10s in the gray box UNISSUED are bringing these days. I have 4 of them unfired & unissued in their boxes plus one that is a shooter. Have seriously concidered selling a couple after New Years. I know the one I shoot a lot is one great shooter.

I bought 5 of them a few years ago for about $300.00 each. I offered them to sale to some cops for the price I paid plus shipping and FFL fee and sold a few and many old guys balked that I was trying to take advantage of them. I thought it was a good price. Two of them had sequential DPD numbers.

Here's a bit of DPD nostalgia from the early 70s.
"Stop the robberies, enjoy safe streets.

I would love to get my mits on one of those DPD marked Winchester 94s.

Quite a bit of controversy over that unit. If I recall, Coleman Young campaigned for mayor saying the first thing he would do was disband STRESS, and in fact he did.

I wonder how many guns turned up in various police executives' and politicians' collections? I heard that a former chief had a bunch of call boxes in his basement. Of course, it was always easier just to take cash.....Back in the 80's they used to auction off 55 barrel drums of guns. You had to have an FFL and bid on them sight unseen: No ability to inspect what was inside. You might have one good gun in the bunch and 50 junk pieces.

Ref DPD long guns: During the 70's, supervisors carried the 30-30 Winchesters in their vehicle trunks and the patrol units (Scout cars) had a gun box in the trunk with one .30 M1 carbine and one shotgun. Sunday day shift had to clean and inspect the guns in their trunks before heading out.

After missing out on one last year, finally scored a decent DPD Model 10.
Inventory number is 12540.
Tt must have been assigned to the desk sergeant.
Not bad for 50 years old:

I believe that in addition to the issued Model 94's, they issued some type of Scoped Remington 700 to "sniper qualified" officers mostly with the Tactical Services Section (TSS). This was well before they started a SWAT team in the late 80's.

I think there are so many Model 10's in good shape out there because so few officers carried them. After a year many of us got something better. A lot of model 25's and a lot of 66's. The department didn't take your model 10 back when you got your own gun so they tended to just sit on closet shelves for the next 24 years or until they were turned in after transition to Glocks. I'm sure someone made a ton of money "acquiring" the department's history whether it was photographs, guns, call boxes, badges, etc.

DPD carried all sorts of sidearms as shown in thread. Here are some Colts that worked in "Motown":

New Police .32 (1902):

Police positive .32 (1916):

Another 1916 Police Positive after it was "demilled":

I have a '25 vintage Army Special 5"bbl. .38 Spl. that I'll have to take a few pics of and post later.

I have talked to a couple of guys that worked Firearms inventory at DPD the 94's were melted years ago along with a bunch of DPD marked shotguns Highstander's and Ithaca's.

If people only new what DPD still has in storage like full auto Thompson's, Uzi's fullsize and Micro Uzi's . The newest are M&P15's now that the m1 carbine's are gone.

I think the rarest DPD marked gun that Detroit sold off to Century Arms (change over to the glocks) has to be the real Winchester 97 trench guns. I have a 97 riot but Detroit had real trench guns surplus from the goverment. There were a couple of thousand and none seem to ever turn up.

I would love to see the Army special I picked up an DPD army special that was customized by a an officer at some point the barrel has been shortened and the grip rounded off like a Detective special. I assume it was done when he retired to make it a carry gun but not sure. Its butchered but still a neat gun

Was wondering if anyone could tell me what the exact firearms policy was back before the Glocks... What were the gun and caliber restrictions... Were backup guns allowed?

Thanks...Bob

pretty sure it had to be colt or smith larger than .380 there was a .380 exception when the DPOA had a commemorative ppk made. But if you could qualify with it you could carry it. There are still a few guys that are still grandfathered in not many but a few. I know the .44 and .41 and .357 mag were popular my father carried a S&W 25-2 .45 from the mid 70's until they gave him a free glock.

I'm loving this thread. My dad retired as a DPD Detective Lieutenant the same month I graduated from the DPD academy. I was drafted into the army 2 years later and never went back. I was issued a 5" Colt OP, but another officer I shared an apartment with got the 5" S&W. I always kind of envied him as I liked the grip of the S&W better. My dad loaned me his Chief's Spl 2" for off-duty carry. Inspector Harry Reeves was still in charge of the pistol instruction back then (1961). That man could do things with a gun that just absolutely amazed me.

My dad carried a Colt DS, but then got a department Colt Cobra. When he retired he tried to buy the Cobra, but they wouldn't sell it to him. Said there weren't enough to satisfy demand. They did let him buy a Colt DS. Dad used to leave it under the seat of his car and it disappeared when his car was stolen one time. I wish he still had it at the time of his death. Instead I inherited a Colt pocket .25ACP. That gun has a terrible trigger pull and the sights are nearly non-existant, but back when I was shooting regularly and well, I could cut a one-hole, 5-shot group with that little gun off a sandbag at 50'. Couldn't hit the broad side of a barn from the inside with it offhand, though.

I have a small collection of S&Ws - a pre M-18 .22LR; a pre M-15 .39Spl; a M-66 .357 and a M 29-2 .44Mag - all 4". I also have a Classic M24 6.5" .44Spl, but that one doesn't count:-)

Keep the pictures of DPD guns coming. Brings back memories.
Ron

I really like the work on that model 36 Joe.
I am going to take my model 49 over to him, it's been through the ringer but served me well for over 30 years.

It turned out nice it is not a show gun I would have liked him to clean it up a little bit more but it will get abused again so no big deal.

Default DPD Commando

When I purchased this I was told it was a former DPD gun but was not certain. Having now viewed the thread, most notably the correlation between date and issue number, I now suspect it really was.

By chance does anybody know how many Commandos the DPD received? This one looks like it saw a lot of use.

Is that the commando that was on gunbroker?? I do not think that is a Detroit Police gun.

It is not stamped correctly for being a Detroit Police gun. Detroit Police guns are marked clearly Detroit Police on the back strap some early ones were engraved DPD on the side plate but I believe that ended in the early 1900's.

Not sure what you mean by correlation by date and issue number? They were inventory numbers not issue number. But one has nothing to do with the other I have seen newer by serial number guns have a lower inventory number then older guns. They have also changed multiple times and started over multiple times.

In the 40's (commandos 1942-43) Detroit was issuing Np Colt offical Police and NP Detective Spl.

The only 100% way to tell is get a letter from Colt. It is possible that Detroit bought some commandos for undercover work but I was told by a few guys that worked firearms section for Detroit undercover guns were not department marked and property of the Michigan state Police.
