Will grips and other parts meant for a N-frame Model 29 fit an older S-frame gun?

Are they exactly the same other than the serial# prefix?

There is no "S" frame. The S was a serial prefix used on the "K" frame guns. The K frame is a medium frame with an opening of 1.82" x 1.48" whereas the N frame is large frame with an opening of 1.89" x 1.73". I hope that is what you were asking.

The simple answer is yes, but it is kind of dispiriting to see a nice 4- or 5-screw gun with modern targets on it.

(I am assuming here that you are referring to serial number prefixes. Modern N frame guns were, of course, made with both an S- and an N- prefix.)

Have to edit here! I didn't see that you mentioned "parts" in your post until proofing. Obviously, some parts from the 4- and 5-screw guns are not going to work on the newer guns. I was just addressing stocks.

The S serial number prefix was used on both K and N frame early post war models. When it comes to the early N frames, some folks refer to them as an "S" frame, but - as JSR points out - it is just a serial number prefix and is not indicative of the frame size.

The grips and some parts from N-prefix N-Frames will fit older S-prefix guns with the same frame. Grips, for instance, will fit both types.

For other parts, it will depend on what part you want to replace. While many parts may seem to just "drop in", many will require some fine adjustments to ensure reliability.

Well, I don't agree with the answer on grips. The early S prefix N frame guns seem to have a longer grip than the later ones. Often we refer to those as transitional guns, and some actually have the prewar long-action internal parts.

On some early postwar guns the frame can be over 1/16" longer. That means those guns just won't take magna style grips from newer guns.

True enough. If the OPer was limiting his question to Pre-29s/29s, this wouldn't be a factor, right?

But I guess his question doesn't really specify that - although I initially read it that way. My bad, as the young people say.
