I am far from a new shooter but have never shot a gun that used moon clips. For a S&W 25-2 in .45 ACP, can someone give me an idea of how these are used and reused? I have also seen full (6 round) full circle clips as well as half (3 round) clips. Is there an advantage or reason for one over the other? Thanks.

The full moon chips act as a speed loader so there are advantages to them. The clip acts like a rim for extraction purposes and on some firearms for headspace. Use is you load them with rounds and unload brass afterwards. You can leave them loaded with no problems.

Basically the rounds clip into the clips. Then all six (or three & three if half moon clips are used) are loaded into the cylinder, similar to a speedloader, except the clip stays with the rounds. Once the rounds are fired, or if the weapon is to be unloaded, the whole package is ejected. A M25-2, 1917, M625 all work the same. The rounds can be fired without the clips, however the ejector star will not contact the casings, so extraction must be done done manually, sometimes even requiring a pencil or similar to push the casings from the front of the cylinder.
The 3 round half moon clips are the original design that came out when the 1917 (both S&W and Colt)appeared as a military arm. Later the full moon clips were developed as a faster way to load. In some circumstances the half moons may be easier to carry, but I believe most people, myself included, prefer the ease of use of the full moon clips.

hi, the moon clips are used for easy loading and unloading of the revolver. you can reuse the moonclip you will just need a tool to remove the spent casings. most of the revolver shooters that use moon clips prefer the full 6 round moon clip for faster loading and un loading..the half moon clips

Sounds like a lot of fuss and bother to me. I LOad and use Auto Rims.

I don't have any problem at all loading or unloading the metal moon clips. The shells simply snap in. Getting the empties back out requires more effort. Use the little tube gizmo, or you can even shove a stout stick into the empy cases and pull them off.

the nylon Rimz clips are awesome.
