I've aquired a 'Chief's Special' in stainless. The "taxpayer ripoff" bag with the empty cartrige is dated 5-22-2009.

Now, the questions (keeping in mind my only other revolver is an 1875 Remington single action replica).
- What is the meaning of the '-14'?
- The double action is just a bit much for my increasingly arthritic right trigger finger (no problem with the left). Can the pull be reduced by lower poundage replacement spring? And if so, what is the factory pull weight and which spring to replace?
- While I'd like to remove the lock system, the flag is in a notch in the frame making its removal unsightly. D'ya think something like Locktite Red or JB Weld in the works would freeze it in the off position?
- What am I forgeting? Or need to do, check, replace, etc.

Thanks

-14 is a revision number. Meaning a change from the original design. So yours has had 14 design changes from the first model.

Yes the pull can be reduced my oiling the action and changing the trigger return spring (rebound) to a 14 LB Wolff spring. Factory spring is 18LB.

The simplest method to defeat the lock is to remove the offending part, which is called the lock arm or "flag". Simple to remove and putting back to original is also possible and preferred. See the FAQ's in the smithing section on information needed to perform the services requested.

There is a member (bullseye smith) offering for sale a plug as a cosmetic replacement to the lock cylinder which will match your gun finish and make the gun appear lockless. He sells the part in the classifieds. The lock arm still needs to be removed for the lock to be disabled.

It's interesting that you bought a 60-14 with a fired case that says 5-22-09. I wonder what's up with that. I bought a 60-15 about 7 or 8 years ago. You usually don't find older revisions being shipped so late, at least not since the "rush".

Sorry for the delay in responding folks. Life keeps getting in the way.

@Gun 4 Fun, I could see the frame sitting around at the factory for a while as the exposed hammer, weight, and other factors don't lend it to concealed carry as well as some of the newer designs and the semi-autos. S&W may even assemble them on a 'when ordered' basis.

@500 Magnum Nut,
- A couple of drops of oil did make a remarkable difference. Got on the Wolff Spring site and they have a 5-pack of rebound springs running from 16 down to 12. I'm going to order a set and start at the 16 and work down until practice isn't too painfull.
- As to the lock flag, I'm trying to keep it in as the frame has a notch milled in it next to the hammer for the flag. If I remove the flag there will be an opening to collect crud and it is aesthetically displeasing. I do want something easily reversable if I ever sell it. I may have to build myself a nonfunctioning flag that will act as a gap filler.

Thanks again and I'll let you know the results.

Update.

Got everything done. Lock replaced with plug, stock rebound spring replaced with 14# (seems ok but won't know until the range), little dabs of grease and oil here and there. No springs in orbit or my eyes, no parts left over. And the thing dryfires without falling apart :D

I did put on a Pachmyer grip that is larger and fits my hand better. Also made of their decelerator rubber (just for the .357 magnums, ya understand.)

Thanks again, guys

Range report. The little beast is still in one piece! Shot 30 rounds of .357 magnum (158gr@1100fps) and 15 rounds of wadcutters (148gr@750fps).

The 14# rebound spring is just about perfect. Thx 500 magnum Nut! The Pachmayr SJ-G/D grips made a big difference with the .357's. With the right hand position it was approching comfortable. With .38+P's the recoil should be more than manageable.
