I have a couple smiths and one is a 1980 model 28. I am looking for a shorter barrel or a complete gun w/ @ 2'' barrel and i keep seeing model 28-2. These guns look very similar in the pictures I'm seeing and just wondering what the hidden difference is. Thanks in advance

The -2 just denotes the second engineering change.
The -1 (~1960) changed to a left hand ejector rod threading.
The -2 (~1961) eliminated the fourth screw in front of the trigger.
None of this has anything to do with the barrel length as you imply. If yours was shipped in 1980 it is a 28-2, just open the cylinder and look at the frame and you will see the Model number.

You do have an original. If it's in good shape and you post it for sale in the classifieds, these boys will be on it like stink on turnip greens
