Although I can find no NYPD type markings on this nice little revolver, after research it appears to be an over run of production for the NYPD. It is a M640-2 .38spl on the .357 mag frame with 2 1/8" full lug barrel and no lock with a satin type finish. Did S&W make this 640-2 in .38 only for general sale, or were these only available due to over run on NYPD production?

The Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson, Third Edition, Page 263 indicates that the 640-1 using this frame was introduced in 1996 and that it was RE-INTRODUCED as the 640-2 in .38 Special for the NYPD in 1997.

I'll bet, however, that THAT was the first place you looked BEFORE posting!

640-2

bigmtnman: There were actually two versions of the 640-2. The first had a bead-blast finish and was originally designed for NYPD; the second was a standard commerical model with brushed stainless finish. I believe the product codes were 103800 and 103804 respectively. The Standard Catalog appears to be wrong regarding the introductory dates, because the NYPD 640-2 pictured below was built in late 1995, not in 1997. The standard version (brushed finish) was the one introduced in 1997.

Regarding the NYPD model: There is no special marking on the gun itself, but "NYPD" is printed on the box label under Features.

Hope that helps! :)

Hello: I wish I could help, but I don't know much about the NYPD no-dash 640. I've got one, but it came without box or papers, and I don't have any other info on it. Another one just sold here in the Classifieds; perhaps the seller might be able to answer your questions:

The factory re-introduced 38 Special versions of the J frame Magnums outside of the NYPD production. Here is a flyer announcing this, can't tell you the date of the brochure as it's not date coded. I believe the bead blast finish, however, may lead one to believe that yours was part of the NYPD over-run production.

I just found a 640-2 like the one in the picture, with the 1 7/8" barrel......and yes , by popular demand, I wish them would bring them back......again! With no locks.

Does anyone have the pictures that SmithNut posted of the S&W ad about the 640-2 in .38 special?
I though I saved it , but I guess I didnt?
