I was on my way home from Ocean City, MD when I stopped in a gun shop in Rehobeth, Delaware and saw a S & W Model 66-7
that was a police trade-in from some Dept. in Australia according to the shop owner. The gun was in great mechanical shape and with almost no holster wear. The gun had a 4" barrel but the unusal thing I noticed was the barrel was counterbored about 1/4". The shop owner said that was the last of several he had sold including a couple with 2-1/2" barrels that were counterbored in the same fashion. Anybody ever seen these before or know the reasoning for the counterbored barrels?

I'm no expert on this but is it possible that gun has the S&W two piece barrel on it? My M620 has the two piece barrel and looks just as you have described.

I am guessing that the police armorer had an accuracy fetish, and would put a recessed target crown on department guns, or the muzzle had been damaged and was repaired.

Yup, the 66-7 has the two-piece barrel, and the last fraction of an inch is counterbored, so the gun has not been modified in that respect.

Hi folks, i am definately no expert, but as far as i thought ,the Australian police carry old worn out model 10 ,s ... the Government has to meet budget somehow !
Maybee the detectives had the model 66 ,s ? And it was their take home gun , hence the no wear description ?
The regular officers check them in at the station when they go home and get a different one the next shift !
I feel sorry for our Cops having to use an old Model 10 ,and get issued a different revolver when at work... and i beleive that they are all standard , heavy trigger units ( Thats in the state of Victoria )...i beleive that South Aus have Glocks now.. Hmmm... i better find out my facts hey :-)
If i were an Aussie copper, i would want a 686 at least :-) , all the bad guys have shotguns !

I recently saw a 64 counterr bored at a local gun show. The gun was very well used but priced way high. The seller took it home again. No superise there.
