Is it safe to use simple green to clean the airweights?

Simple Green? Actually I prefer to clean all of my guns with a
good strong salt water mix. Really dissolves the powder
fouling. Since they are so clean afterwards I don't have to
bother with oiling them. Saves lots of money. I would guess
that you are doing a bit of trolling.

Umm no....... I really clean my glock, bersa and blackpowder revolver with simple green. The first time I heard about it was from a firearms instructor at peace officer training.

Also wanted to add that I have done so for years and havent seen any negatice effects. I dont use it straight I dillute it with hot water and clean them in a small red tub, the red is to ensure I dont ever use it for anything but cleaning guns. I have never cleaned a rifle with it just those three guns and as I said I then dry with a blow dryer to make sure all the water is out and then wipe down everything while still hot with a remoil wipe. Its worked great and to say I'm a troll or something is kind of rude.

If you guys say its bad for aluminum then I wont clean my 642 with it. Thats why I asked the question, to see if it would have negitive effects on the finish or metal of the gun. So far I've only put 50 rounds through it and I wiped the powder residue off of the gun with a micro fiber cloth then ran a remoil wipe through the bore and cylenders followed by running a bore snake through. Then I wiped down the whole gun with a remoil wipe then wiped it all down again with some cloth cleaning patches to get the excess off so it isent too oily. I did that because it wasent very dirty and I wanted to wait until I decide what products to use before I really clean it.

Aluminum - Is it safe to use Simple Green® on aluminum?
When used with caution and according to the instructions, Simple Green All-Purpose Cleaner has been safely and successfully used to clean aluminum. Simple Green All-Purpose Cleaner, Crystal Simple Green® Cleaner/Degreaser, Simple Green Pressure Washer Concentrates, and Pro Series™ Simple Green® Automotive Cleaner have been used on aircraft, automotive, industrial and consumer aluminum items for over 20 years. However, caution and common sense must be used: aluminum is a soft metal that easily corrodes with unprotected exposure to water. The aqueous-base and alkalinity of Simple Green All-Purpose Cleaner can accelerate the corrosion process. Therefore, contact times for unprotected or unpainted aluminum surfaces should be kept as brief as the job will allow - never for more than 10 minutes. Large cleaning jobs should be conducted in smaller-area stages to achieve lower contact time. Rinsing after cleaning should always be extremely thorough - paying special attention to flush out cracks and crevices to remove all Simple Green® product residues. Unfinished, uncoated or unpainted aluminum cleaned with Simple Green products should receive some sort of protectant after cleaning to prevent oxidation.
Simple Green has also developed break-through water based cleaners that are safe for use on metals, plastics, rubber and high tech alloys. Extreme Simple Green® Aircraft & Precision Cleaner and Simple Green® Pro HD are available on both the industrial and retail markets, respectively. These products were initially developed for the aircraft industry and extensive testing shows that they are safe and effective on a variety of metals and other sensitive surfaces even in the most extreme circumstances.

Simple Green® Stainless Steel One Step Cleaner & Polish is another option for cleaning polished aluminum. This product is designed for light duty metal cleaning and polishing.

Aircraft Cleaning — Is Simple Green® safe for cleaning aircraft?
Simple Green manufactures a product specifically designed for use on aircraft — Extreme Simple Green® Aircraft & Precision Cleaner. This product was initially developed for use in the aircraft industry and extensive testing shows it to be safe for use on aluminum, plastics, rubber, and high tech alloys, in both normal and extreme temperatures and stress conditions. Extreme Simple Green has been tested to the following test protocols: Conforms to: Boeing D6-17487 rev.P @ neat & 10%: Sandwich Corrosion; Acrylic Crazing; Paint Softening; Hydrogen Embrittlement. Conforms to: ASTM F 945 Stress Corrosion @ 1:5; ARP 1755B Stock Loss @ 1:5; PWA 36604 rev.C Hot Corrosion @ 1:5; PWA36604 rev.D Compatibility w/ Non Metallic Materials @ 1:5. Test documents are available upon request. All listed testing was performed by Scientific Materials International, Inc. This testing does not constitute endorsement or approval from Boeing or Pratt & Whitney.

Simple green is similar to castrol's super clean, will oxidize aluminum rather quickly, nasty stuff. Will turn your fingernails yellow also.

Local gun store had a Charter Pink Lady revolver that had had most of the pink anodize stripped off, allegedly done by Simple Green. I would NEVER use this stuff on my motorcycles - or my guns!

I have been using Hoppes Elite because my wife is sesitive to harsh chemicals. It works really well and I use it on my 642 with very good results. It has no harsh smell and is easy on the hands.

I have just recently tried Hoppes ELITE.. I was very pleased with it.. Good Stuff:D

It's you gun. Take a look at this first: https://www.logsa.army.mil/psmag/archives/PS2000/573/573-35.pdf

As stated, I have personally seen and handled a P226 that had the ano partly removed by regular formula Simple Green. The frame was basically ruined, since the ano hardens the surface. (Possibly it could be re-anodized, but in either case the factory warranty is gone.)

I'd use MPro 7 or Ballistol or something less harsh, but it's your gun.

I just love the smell of Hoppes #9. I also love the fact that the smell of #9 drove three ex mother in laws out of my home every time I opened a bottle:D. Now that I think of it the smell of #9 may have helped move my three exes’ out of my life as well;). Gotta love that stuff!

No I agree. Thanks to everyone for telling me not to do it. I am however going to continue to clean my glock that way but may rethink useing it on my bersa and black powder revolver. I think I am going to see if I can find some of the Hoppes elite like many have recommended. Thanks everyone!

Sounds like mission accomplished;-)

You should try Ballistol, especially since you're shooting black powder. It's really big with the black powder guys.

Sort of OT but my experience with BP is that hot soapy water (Dawn) works best.

Your right that does work great with tripple 7 (which I love) or pyrodex but sometimes I like to shoot the real thing and hot soapy water dosent get off real black powder very well.

I've tried a lot of different cleaning solvents over the years, I don't really care for the smell of Hoppe's #9 or even Shooter's Choice. Hoppe's brings back a lot of fond memories of "after high school" hunts in the 70's but that's not a good enough reason for me to use it anymore!

I've stayed away from water-soluble cleaners since I have a lot of blued guns and don't want to strip all the oils away or deal with rinsing them with water, only having to re-oil all of them again after cleaning. Seems like too many steps to me!

One thing I've been using lately, and you may want to consider trying, is Kroil. It's pretty mild-smelling and is definitely not going to be bad for the gun.

I used to do a lot of pretty hard core reenacting and we burned only the real stuff, of course. Water (no deterg) was all we had...the strongest liquid available was urine...it all worked ok at least if mixed with a little elbow grease. :)

It's because the aroma of Hoppe's gets you in a gun frame of mind.

EarlFH

Well said. Hoppe's does precisely that. I get flashbacks of my best days at the range and loading bench. Just make sure you clean your guns in a well ventilated room or even outside. I find that I am cleaning my guns more often at the range after a session. Outside, already there, and spills and residue are not as much of an issue. As for Simple Green????? I don't get it. With all the quality, odor free, and better products available today, Simple Green would be my last choice.

+1 for Ballistol

That's my choice because it's safe on nickel. And if you spill it on the table, rub it around before you wipe it up. You're helping to clean the house!:D

It has been around for a while, is approved as a lubricant in the food industry and smells peasantly. It does not have the best lubricating, nor preserving properties but does a really good allround job without nauseating fumes.

Or does it smell pleasantly to me because of my association with shooting?

Simple Green will take the chrome off of Mercedes Benz wheels...I would not use that product on my guns.

I too suggest Hoppe's Elite. No chemical smell and made specifically for guns.
