Default Pro/Champion or Perf. Center worth the extra bucks?

I'm looking for a 627 or 625 for our action pistol league this summer, I've been running my 22-4 thunder ranch and my 325PD Nightguard clone.

Been eyeing up the pro lines and PC, are they really worth it? I know that PC will get me tool steel parts and chamfered charge holes, anything else to speak of?

I know I'd like to have the interchangable front sights, at least the gold bead.

This is a great question.

I asked a similar one a few weeks ago with no real answers.

It would be really nice to have an actual description of what differentiates each PC gun from the standard offering.

I am very happy with my new PC revolver after it came back from S&W, but I am amazed that S&W can ask a premium for these guns without describing what that premium buys.

They describe the upgrades on their PC 1911 clones, but have a "Just trust us" attitude with the PC revolvers.

I've asked the same question and the general consensus seems to be, if you want the extra collectables and extra 1" from the PC models, its a good value. Otherwise just go with the PRO. Its got everything you need and many of the really serious competition shooters send it to APEX anyways. Some people will even say the forged parts vs MIM is worth it alone, but this may or may not matter to you (especially if you're gonna send it to APEX anyways).

As a side note.. S&W apparently aren't carrying the aluminum cases that come with PC guns anymore. I recently purchased a new one and the case came broken/scratched. I called S&W to replace it and they're sending me a plastic gray one since they don't carry the aluminum. I'm also planning on selling the wood grips that came with my PC 627 to make up the difference between Pro.

Personal impressions: I was initially extremely impressed with the trigger on my 627 PC. Then I took it to the range and it had light primer strikes on factory reloads. I did some research on it and apparently the strain screw was loose. Whether the PC gunsmith loosened this on purpose or not for a "trigger job" is still up for debate, but now that I've tightened the strain screw all the way - the trigger is definitely much heavier (but still smooth).

My answer to this question would not be yes, but HELL, YES!

The trigger on my PC 627 UDR is absolutely top-notch, and was so right out of the box with the strain screw tight.

Regarding the discontinued PC aluminum cases, it's no loss that Smith doesn't use them anymore. They were junk. The new gray plastic PC cases are good enough for me and are, in reality, more durable. Over and above this, none of my handguns ever see the inside of their factory cases after I bring them home, anyway.

Agreed. I'm actually relieved that S&W is sending me a plastic case. Observing the aluminum, even if it weren't currently messed up, I can easily see it getting messed up in the near future. On a side note, I've seen the aluminum case sell on ebay for over $100 now. Thats about my only reason to wish on my aluminum case not being scratched up. I think this alone might make it totally worth getting a PC over Pro if you can find one with an aluminum case.

Being worth the extra bucks is subjective. I bought my Performance Center and Pro guns because of the "coolness" factor. For example, to me the M&P R8 is the Darth Vader of hand guns so I had to have one. Some people like the regular line of guns and then do a decent trigger job on them and call it a day. I have done this and am happy with the end product. But the uniqueness of the Perf/Pro guns makes them appealing to me. So for me they are worth the extra bucks.
