Just picked up this 686 yesterday. This is my first revolver, and after much reading, I knew this was the one I wanted.
The Ahrends grips were a bonus and work well with my smaller hands. This 686 is an AARnnnn vintage - around 1981?

I purchased these two over the last couple of months. The 686 -6 6" is brand new and the 686 -4 4" was purchased last month from a friend of a friend.

Okay, looking over this thread and didn't note the "challenge" you mentioned so I'll take a shot.
I'm thinking a -3 or earlier 4" square butt, with the newer 686 SSR barrel added. Could be TOTALLY wrong (and frequently am ) but that's my guess for now. Correct?
P.S. If original, or Frankenmagnum, either way I kind of dig it.

I *think* I may have posted this in a grip thread, but ...
This -6 was one of the very early warning signs that I might have an addiction ...

My 4" ex PD 686 no dash, purchased as a police trade in very cheap, polished it up and put on a set of Hogues to replace the completely worn out Pach's....never has had the M factory mod but shoots perfectly, so that's how it will stay.....second pic is how it looked when I bought it.....

Found this one in a LGS. Had just come in and I was holding it, trying to decide.
Another customer then said: "if he doesn't take it, I will."
So, done deal. A 3" -5 seven shooter is not common as I later discovered:
Recently added the stocks from Nyteman44s cache.

I only have two guns my first a Glock 19 and my last S&W 686-6 in 21/2" I was amazed at how easy it was to shoot it's more accurate than me even out to 50 yards!

I just picked up this 686-3 this week, for a pretty good price considering the recent panic 600$. It needs new stocks, the Houge rubber are kind of loose fitting on the back strap and the edges of the rubber are swelled a bit on the right like they had to much solvent soaking.
And my 686-4, great carry piece in a Lobo IWB horsehide holster!

If I'm holding it, it feels nose-heavy. If I'm shooting it feels just right!

How come most of the pics in this thread make me think most of you have no idea what S&W made these fine revolvers for ?
1.) ride hard
2.) put up wet
3.) repeat 1&2
686 from the pawn shop
other bits and pieces from the bargain bin
I couldn't even guess how many thousands of rounds I have put downrange with this one.
10 shots, 40yds, offhand, isosceles, double action
got 5/10 in there pretty good anyway

This is the best thread ever! I'm partial to the short bbl 686 revolvers, but I like them all. This is my recently acquired 686-4, and now my only one.
